THE sound of someone talking slowly filtered into Midnight's ears though it was disconcerting because at first he couldn't understand what was being said, only that something was being said and it was directed at him. For a blind cat, not being able to understand sounds was dangerous and frightening but strangely Midnight felt only a twinge of discomfort. Tuning out the speaker, Midnight focused inward. His consciousness floated through his limbs, checking for injuries. He found none. Midnight skimmed through his memory of the vision, though he found it blurry and out of focus. He remembered a lioness and a bloody tiger but not much else. Tucking the vision away to examine later when he was alone, or perhaps even with Wrenstar, Midnight moved on. He breathed deep. It was steadier now, more controlled, less panicked and the action itself was much smoother. The tang of blood had faded but not gone away completely though. That was what drew Midnight's consciousness outward again. Someone was still speaking but now he could understand it better.
IT was Ravenpaw, apologizing...but for what? Midnight frowned slightly as he groggily dragged his cloudy gold eyes open. The view remained black. Midnight sent a silent thanks to StarClan. Most would think he liked seeing things when he dreamed or had visions. Not true. Visions and dreams meant something was going to happen and it was usually a bad something.
"STOP...apologizing," Midnight mumbled, dragging himself up a bit. He felt stiff, as though he'd slept for a month and not moved at all. Midnight flexed his claws and found the stiffness was because he was incredibly tense, as though ready to flee or attack. Slowly the medicine cat loosened his muscles, mentally forcing himself to relax and slump against the ground until he appeared nearly boneless.
REMEMBERING the rambling apprentice, Midnight turned his head until his nose brushed fur. "You're bleeding..." Midnight mumbled, an odd grogginess clinging to him. Shaking his head, Midnight sat up again and leaned toward Ravenpaw again, skimming his nose carefully along the younger tom's side, finding the newly opened wounds. "I'll need cobwebs...did any of these get dirty? I think...I think I ran into you, we'll have to clean them if they did." Pushing himself to stand, Midnight kept his head slung low, nose still brushing Ravenpaw's pelt as he waited for the world to stop tilting under his feet. "Come on young one, on your feet, time to get those cobwebs changed and cuts cleaned so they don't get infected and make you sick."
THE aftershocks of the vision complete, Midnight let it roll off of his back like rain drops on a duck's feathers. He used to be afraid, when he was an apprentice and a young medicine cat but after a while, he grew used to them. They were normal for medicine cats, unpleasant, but normal. There was nothing he could do about it now and he had a patient that needed wounds cleaned and was probably freaking out if the fear-scent on him was anything to go by. Midnight wasn't out to frighten Ravenpaw, the young one had had enough excitement last night and needed to rest and recover.
ORIENTED again to which way his den was, Midnight raised his head but laid his tail across Ravenpaw's shoulders. "Come on, it's alright," Midnight reassured him softly, blind eyes kind but looking to the left of Ravenpaw's head.

He walked through the entrance of the den and was greeted by a barrage of different herbs scents. He felt a bubble of warmth in his belly. He hadn't a clue why, but being in here made him happy. He looked over at Midnight and purred, rubbing his head against the dark tom's shoulders.
"What are all the herbs and what are they for? This one smells nice." He walked over to the cat's store of herbs and pulled out a leaf or two of catmint. He leaf near the medicine cat's paws. "Hey, are any of these edible, 'cause they smell like they could be." He said in a squeaky voice filled with happiness. He flicked his little black tail across the dark cat's nose. "Does changing cobwebs take long? I want to know about the herbs."
He wandered around the den, sniffing herbs and everything he could find. He padded over to Midnight and sniffed him. "Even you smell like herbs. I guess that's why I can pick you out against everyone else." He purred, sitting in front of the large tom. "Well, I think I should sit still before I find something else to gawk at." He chuckled, twitching her tail back and forth. He pawed at a clump of moss on the ground. He hooked a claw in it and tossed it up. He flinched when the ball fell on Midnight's head. "Oops, sorry!" He gave a crooked smile.

SIGHING quietly, Midnight idly wondered where all of Ravenpaw's energy came from, but knew he couldn't belittle the apprentice for it. Energy was the gift of youth and while Midnight was no elder, he had mellowed out since his own apprenticeship. Moving through the screen that blocked off his little piece of the world, Midnight took in a deep soothing breath of his familiar herbs. Catmint. Sorrel. Wild garlic. Borage. Alder. So many others. Their scents twined together on a quiet breeze and soothed the black tom as he listened to Ravenpaw asking one question after the other faster than the medicine cat could spit out answers, so, he simply let Ravenpaw go on and on. Rounded ears twitched as in his mental map of his home, he tracked the apprentice's bouncing steps. He could hear the scuffle of the smaller paws and the brush of fur against the occasional plant.
PERKING up at the smell of catmint, Midnight purred in amusement at Ravenpaw's exuberance about it. Feeling Ravenpaw's head rubbing against his shoulder, Midnight turned his head and brushed his nose against the top of the young tom's head.
"MOST of these herbs are edible, yes, but don't go eating one unless I tell you to or you might poison yourself," Midnight warned, gathering cobwebs from his den and pausing to collect a few dock leaves and a few elder berries.
SLIPPING out of his den, the blind tom paused to listen for Ravenpaw, missing part of the tom's almost endless babble. "What did you say..." Midnight was cut off when a glob of something landed on his head. Sightless gold eyes blinked once, twice. The glob slid down his face and muzzle and fell to the ground with a soft rustle. Putting down the wad of cobwebs, dock and elder berries, Midnight poked the thing that had fallen from the sky. A wad of moss. Relief washed through the tom. He'd been afraid it would be something worse. That was the downside to being blind, not knowing for sure when something unexpected happened.
"IT'S alright Ravenpaw but please settle down a bit so I can fix you up. It won't take long," Midnight said, picking up his bundle and making his way over to Ravenpaw.
HE walked a bit oddly, seeking out the apprentice, every now and then sweeping one of his front paws from left to right until his paws brushed Ravenpaw's. With the tom being so bouncy, Midnight had to be a bit cautious so he didn't end up crashing into the apprentice again. Reclining on his haunches, Midnight skimmed his nose along Ravenpaw's back and side. It was a bare feather-light touch. Each time he came across a portion of cobweb, he would remove it carefully without disrrupting the scab that had formed over the young tom's wounds. With the old cobwebs piled to one side, Midnight used a large leaf to mix the new paste. He chewed the dock leaves into a thick paste before spitting it back onto the leaf and using a tooth to delicately prick the elder berries. The juice trickled into the paste and was deftly mixed by the blind tom before he dabbed his paw in it and began smearing it over the scratches.
"YOU seem interested in the herbs," Midnight said as he smeared his paste over one of the reopened gashes. His sightless eyes stared at nothing in particular as he worked, but his touch was never wrong, finding the wounds and hurts with ease. Being blind, Midnight's heightened senses were perfect for the art of healing. His touches were lighter than a normal cat's, more precise because he used scent rather than sight to find the blood on the tom's dark pelt, and he knew the herbs as well as he knew how to breathe. Their scents caressed his coat, creating the herbal scent Ravenpaw had commented on earlier, he slept amongst them, they were all he had known in the world. He'd never seen them but he didn't need to. He knew where they grew, how they grew, what was poison and what was healing.
FOR his lot in life, this was all Midnight needed but could the same be said for Ravenpaw, a young tom with vitality and energy and a bright future? Usually interest in herbs led to an apprenticeship to be a medicine cat but not many were cut out for the mundane work of being a medicine cat. For the hours of mixing herbs, the days of searching for herbs, the nights spent wide awake beside a deathly ill patient, the annual worries of greencough outbreaks and the strain of being one of StarClan's favored. It made Midnight curious if Ravenpaw would be fit for such a life. He seemed interested and reacted well to the scent of herbs that most turned their noses up at, but was it simply youthful curiosity or genuine potential?

He laughed and swung his head towards the cat. "A young cat like me has a lot to learn if he is to survive in the world. Knowing about the herbs could be useful to me someday. Maybe it would prove..." His voice trailed off and he started to stare off into space. He already knew that there was nothing that he could do to prove to his father that he was ever good enough. Plus is father was gone, or at least he hoped that to be true. He shook his head. 'I really got to stop worrying about that good for nothing mouse-brain.' He thought and hissed mentally. He coughed to clear his throat a little bit.
"How long have you been a medicine cat for this clan? I'm sure you've been doing this for awhile. I bet trying to learn all the herbs and their treatments must have taken such a long time." He mewed with a slight chuckle. "You must have had a lot of support from your parents." He dropped his gaze to the floor. He kept silent and let his thoughts swim around in his mind. 'Why did father hate me so much? I know that Luna was just a little ray of sunshine, but why choose her over me? I guess he never wanted me. I could have died fighting to save him and he still would have hated me. I'm worthless.'
He gave the dark tom a halfhearted smile. "Am I close to being done yet? I don't mean to rush, I'm just getting bored and my paws are itching to move and do something." He looked over to the ball of cobwebs next to the cat and the herb paste he made. It looked weird but it would help his wounds heal. He wanted them to heal as fast as possible so he could go running about in the forest or just around camp.
His tail flicked back and forth as the medicine cat worked. He closed his eyes and felt everything that the cat was doing. The feathery touch of his whiskers skimming his pelt, the cobwebs being removed, more paste put on and the cobwebs to cover the whole mess. He must look pretty funny with all this stuff on him. 'Oh well, I just want to get better.' He stretched out his front paws, one by one, extending his claws and rotating his paws slightly. He looked at the floor and took out one claw. He drew in the dust that was there. It was nothing in particular, he just drew a few awkward shapes and squiggles.

RAVENPAW had to be one of Midnight's more amusing patients. A lot of them quietly sat and endured their treatment, staring at nothing in particular as far as Midnight could tell, tense from the pains or impatience. Really that one depended on what warrior or apprentice was under his care seeing as some had higher pain tolerances than others. When Ravenpaw mentioned having the support of his parents, Midnight's ministrations stilled and his sightless gold eyes fixed unmoving, by chance ending up looking at Ravenpaw's pelt and the gob of herbal paste he'd just smeared over the wound there. The cobwebs to cover it was held in his jaws but he made no move to layer them over the paste. It took Ravenpaw mentioning his restlessness for Midnight to pull himself out of his stupor and begin slowly laying the cobwebs over the wound. Ravenpaw sure had a knack for asking the hard questions, that was for sure. It must have been some kind of StarClan given talent or something.
"I don't know if my parents support it," Midnight told the young tom neutrally, sweeping his paw for the leaf with the paste on it to dress one last scratch on Ravenpaw's flank. "My mother left the clan to be with my father. He was killed in a forest fire and she came back. My brothers and sisters didn't survive the whole ordeal and the clan wouldn't take my mother back. The only reason they took me was because Goldenclaw insisted I fulfilled a vision he had."
LEANING in to make sure he'd covered the whole wound, Midnight pondered the foggy memories he had to his family. After all, he hadn't been born blind, he'd merely lost it to the disease that plagued his family when he was still quite young. He remembered his mother's beautiful soft black pelt and kind gold eyes. Faintly he could bring up the image of a larger more burly black leopard with more orange-gold eyes and then a silver-muzzled old she-cat with cloudy eyes like he had now. His grandmother, probably, graying with age, snarl-toothed and cranky but adoring of her grandkits. He remembered being small and weak and his mother telling him they were gone after a night of confusion and heat and suffocating smoke. Then...slowly...the world had faded to black and he remembered one by one his siblings disappeared, succumbing to sickness or simply wandering away. He'd never figured out why Dusk disappeared, only that he had and in desperation to save her last kit, Blackbird had fled back to her clan in hopes of finding mercy.
SHAKING his head, the black medicine cat cleared his throat and leaned back. "It didn't take long for me to learn the herbs. They all smell different and since scent is my world, it was easy. Often times I can tell what injury or illness a cat has by their scent from some distance. But that's not important now. You're all done. You can go to the apprentice den if you'd like or sit in camp and talk to some of the warriors but I don't want to catch you out in the forest until those wounds don't bleed anymore and I will know if they do."
COLLECTING the supplies he had used, Midnight got up and moved to his den, depositing what he hadn't used back to its proper place and disposing of what wasn't reusable. Run of the mill work for a medicine cat, another day, another injured clanmate. Midnight had a fairly quiet existence, one or two cats popping in with minor problems every day. On a good day he had no visitors. For some that may seem lonesome and secluded but Midnight didn't mind. The less use the clan had for him, the better. Putting the thought aside, the sightless leopard turned and slipped out of his den again, thinking of finding a patch of sunlight to warm himself in once Ravenpaw went off to wreak havoc all around camp. In the back of his mind, Midnight reminded himself to find Wrenstar at some point and talk to the she-cat about the young tom. Who was his mentor? Where had he come from? Why had he been sliced up last night?
SIGHING, Midnight laid himself in a pool of warm sunlight, idly twitching his ears to see if Ravenpaw had left the clearing or not.

He yawned a little bit. He knew he was told he could got to the apprentices' den or chat with the warriors but none of the seemed to interest him. He sighed and watched as the larger black tom walked out of his den and into the clearing, but Ravenpaw hung back and sat at the entrance to the medicine cat's den. He looked around the camp and lied down just at the entrance to Midnight's den. He was in no hurry to leave the scent's of the den he was just in, but at the same time wanted to do something.
He looked over to the apprentices' den. Ears drooped and tail idly swaying in the dust, he watched the vacant den for a moment. 'How can I sleep in there? I'm the only apprentice this clan has and it's lonely in there.' He felt his heart sink to the bottom of his small chest. 'I wouldn't be alone if my sister hadn't have died. I still don't understand why she had to leave me and momma.' He dragged his claws across the dirt and dust. He laid his head on his paws and let his thoughts wander for awhile. His thoughts led him to the day of his little sister's death.
Little Luna was curled next to Ravenpaw, her nose pressed against his and little purr rumbled from her chest. The black tom cat licked her forehead got up to get a quick drink. Their father was out hunting and the mother was sleeping just a few feet from the kits. The tom looked back at his sister and saw her chest heaving strangely. He rushed to her side and shook her a little. "Luna, what's wrong? Why are you breathing all funny like that?" She looked up at him, her pale green eyes clouded in fear and pain. She flailed about, gasping as her chest heaved. "Mother!" Silver, their mother, awoke, a growl rumbling from her throat as she rushed to her daughter's side. "Luna dear, can you hear me? Just hold on a moment." Fear was as clear as the sunlight through a piece or ice in her voice. She placed a paw on the small dark she-cat's chest and felt has each time it heaved, it grew weaker. Ravenpaw's sister was fading fast, suffocating on StarClan knows what. The dark tom stared in horror, tears streaming down his face. He let out a scream...
Ravenpaw awoke in the clearing of the camp, panting heavily, eyes wide and tear streaks down his muzzle. He pushed up to get to his paws. He coughed and felt that his throat was dry. He looked over at Midnight and then around the camp. He fell back on his hunches and lowered his head. 'It was just a dream, a horrible, terrible dream.' He breathed in and out, focusing on each breath.

AS he laid sprawled in the clearing, Midnight let his eyes drift closed, throwing his mind backward in time, idly pondering his past in that place between sleep and wakefulness. He remembered being small and puny by comparison to the other apprentices due to his mother's inability to provide for him, remembered being bullied by the other apprentices because he was a loner, his mother was a traitor and he was blind. They considered him useless and didn't run him out only because Goldenclaw was his mentor and could strike fear into their hearts despite being a medicine cat and not a seasoned warrior. A small smile crawled onto his face as he sleepily thought of his mentor. He'd seen Goldenclaw once, when he'd been dubbed LeopardClan's medicine cat. Never before had Midnight felt such respect for a single cat. Even when Goldenclaw took a shape only through touch and scent and sound, Midnight had respected the wise medicine cat. When he'd seen Goldenclaw, he hadn't been disappointed. His mentor had been a fine specimen of a leopard, his pelt a rich gold tawny with ebony black rosettes spanning across his lean frame. Muscles had rippled smoothly under his pelt and he had had cunning blue eyes that seemed to smile when Midnight looked into them to receive his new title.
WHEN he'd gone to achieve his rank, he'd been heavy of heart after sitting vigil for Goldenclaw and then burying his mentor. It had been hard, waking up from his dream of falling stars and smelling death in the clearing. No one else had smelled it until he'd come running out into the main clearing and told Wrenstar that Goldenclaw had gone on to StarClan. He'd never forget seeing his mentor. It had made him feel weak and strong all at once. Weak because of how much he missed the cat that had been his closest friend and companion, strong because he saw faith in Goldenclaw's steady blue gaze.
MIDNIGHT didn't know how long he laid dozing in the camp clearing but when he opened his eyes to blackness, he wasn't sure what roused him. Sitting up, the black tom twitched his ears. He heard a few warriors a bit away discussing a hunting patrol and going to round up a third warrior to join them. Such normal talk shouldn't have woken him. Frowning slightly, Midnight focused in his hearing and breathed deep. No blood scent but...fear scent? Midnight sat up a bit straighter before standing completely. Sweeping his head, he found the direction of the scent coming from his den. Padding toward it, he caught Ravenpaw's scent and let out a silent sigh. Hadn't he sent Ravenpaw back to the apprentice den? Apparently the young tom had not left farther than the screen dividing Midnight's small clearing from the main camp clearing.
WHEN he was closer, Midnight could practically feel the trembling energy around the younger tom and smell the hints of fear and despair that coiled around him like so many serpents. "You are not at peace little one," Midnight observed, reclining on his haunches, golden sightless eyes staring at the ground somewhere near Ravenpaw's feet. "Your wounds are not inflamed and there is no danger here. What do you fear?"

He just lowered his head more. "I know there isn't any danger here, but just now as I was dozing and thinking to myself... I was thrown back into my younger years. It was the day of my sister's death." His voice squeaked as he reached end of his sentence. He coughed to clear his throat of the tightening feeling and tried to keep his tears held back. He flattened his ears and took a deep breath.
"I can't forget about my sister. Luna was my the light in my young life. We did everything together. We were best friends in many ways. I will never forget her memory." He muttered softly. He lifted his gaze to Midnight's face. His eyes clouded with sorrow and much pain, but he knew the dark cat couldn't see it, only sense it. He rubbed his head and against his shoulder.
'I hate feeling like this. I hate that I've lost the one closest to me. And I hate not being about to see her. I've seen mother, but she was nowhere to be seen. Maybe she can't stand to see me like this. Luna...' He sat back again, tail wrapped around his paws and head low. "Midnight, how come I couldn't see her when I nearly passed away last night? I saw mother, but Luna was nowhere to be seen. What does that mean? Was it something I did?" His voice was small but curious.
Ravenpaw chuckled to himself. "Listen to me. I'm asking a question that probably has no answer. But still... I can't help wondering why I didn't see her. I really miss her ever since she..." He shook his head and looked up at the sky, watching birds fly by and clouds roll sluggishly across the vast blueness.

AH. So young Ravenpaw had tasted death? It saddened Midnight's heart to hear and he sympathized with the young apprentice. After his father and grandmother were swallowed by the wildfire, he had been surrounded by death. His sisters had fallen ill and some nights he can still smell the sickness, laying in their makeshift den as his world slowly faded to black. Blackbird...his poor mother. She'd been distraught to lose her mate and now threatened with losing her daughters. Midnight's waning sight hadn't even touched her notice until it was too late to do anything about it. He doubted anything could have been done anyway. Regardless, Midnight still had nightmares about hearing his sisters cry in pain and weakness and hunger, wishing he could help them. He'd wished so hard it had hurt. That was when he'd started dreaming about stars and moonlit clearings and mysterious cats he'd never seen before. He hadn't dared tell Blackbird for fear of his mother's mental instability under all the stress of her crumbling family. When Onyx and Haze had died and Dusk wandered away, Midnight had genuinely feared his mother would kill him in a fit of rage or let him waste away as depression claimed her. So, in many ways he could understand Ravenpaw's pains and wondered how he could soothe them.
"TO taste death so young, it is sad," Midnight agreed with the younger cat, his sightless eyes turning toward the sounds of the camp clearing. "But it does make you strong. When my sisters died and my brother left, my mother brought me to my fate, to the clan through their dying. Whenever I dream of StarClan, I never see them but not because they do not love me or that they are ashamed of me." Midnight's long black tail curled comfortingly around Ravenpaw. "I do not see them because I do not need to see them. Last night when you were close to death, you saw your mother because you needed her comfort and guidance. She gave you life once and had to be the cat to do it again, to send you back."
UNCURLING his tail, Midnight turned his cloudy eyes toward the young tom again.
"WHEN you have true need of the strength your sister gave you, when even your mother's kindness can not give your path light, then you will see her. Not a moment before and perhaps not in the same form as you saw your mother."
IT was a cruel reality, being able to see those that had passed on but not knowing when you would. Midnight used to long to see his sisters, to see them whole and healthy again under that blessed starlight, but to this day he never had. He'd never seen Dusk or his father, grandmother or mother, though he did not know if Blackbird had truly died or not. He only knew that she had been exiled formally out of the clan while he remained behind with Goldenclaw to be his apprentice. Sometimes Midnight missed them or had faint half dreams of being in that den again just before they fell ill or just before the wildfire. He would remember the comfort of their scents as his world slowly faded. At the time he'd been too young to realize what was happening, but now he knew better. He let himself take comfort in those memory dreams, taking it as a sign his sisters were with him and wished him peace and comfort.
WHEN the dreams ended, those thoughts made it easier to wake up and leave them, knowing they would be there again when he was in need of them.

He dug his claws into the ground and a few tears fell down his muzzle, soaking into the dust. His muscles bunched up in his shoulders, his breaths coming in shallow gasps. A small growl came from his chest.
He looked up at Midnight, dull golden eyes ablaze with hurt, anger and determination. "I blame myself for little Luna's death, but I am determined to be a great cat just like she would have wanted me to." He mewed. He blinked, once, twice, and his eyes changed back to the same curious golden color. He shook his head and looked back down at his paws. "I still mourn over her, but time has to pass. I have to keep my mind in the present and look towards the future rather than the past."
He coughed slightly and looked towards the leader's den. "Where is the leader at? I haven't seen her since I came here." He changed the subject rather quickly. He didn't like talking about his sister much. Her death shattered his heart and nowadays the subject was a bit touchy. He was glad to change the subject, even if the medicine cat didn't want to change it. He looked back at the dark tom, awaiting an answer and hoping that he would not avoid it.
