THE VISIONS THAT I'VE SEEN HAVE LEFT ME TORN
BETWEEN THE RESURRECTION AND THE PROPHECY UNBORN
I THINK THAT I WILL DOCUMENT THE FALL
AND SAY I HATE TO SAY IT, BUT I TOLD YOU ALL
NAME... Midnight
AGE... 49 Moons
GENDER... Male
CLAN... LeopardClan
POSITION... Medicine Cat
SPECIES... Black Leopard
APPEARANCE...
A beautifully colored feline, Midnight is exactly the shade his name implies. His pelt is a deep ebony black with faint darker spots patterning the short fur. He may lack the striking stripes and vivid tawny or stunning silver fur of many of his clanmates but Midnight is still a handsome enough specimen. Built to be light on his feet, he is slender and as supple as a viper slithering through the undergrowth. In fact, there is one very special feature about Midnight that is...rather surprising. His eyes. His eyes are the color of gold in the sunlight, a very pale yellow that some find unnerving and tend not to meet his gaze. That, however, is not the only disarming thing about his eyes. Midnight is totally and completely blind. The dark pupils of his eyes as a kit diluted into the yellow of his eyes, clouded by the cataracts that give his eyes such a pale cast. To look at him or glance at him however, it's hard to tell because the blindness in his eyes could be rationaly explained as just having pale eyes. Once someone gets close however, they see the fading in the pupil and the slight cloudiness that covers the molten gold of his gaze. Without the cataracts, Midnight would have had eyes of stunning gold but now they are simply a pale yellow.
PERSONALITY...Most blind felines are defensive, cold, sharp or angry at the world because they feel they have to compensate. Not Midnight. He could care less what others think of his lack of vision because he is perfectly capable of doing what he needs to do. He doesn't have to hunt or fight, he just has to be able to heal. That is what he was meant to do in life and that is what he does flawlessly. Therefore, he has no reason to be high and mighty or believe others owe him anything because he is blind. Midnight feels that as long as he does what he has agreed to, healing, then he doesn't need that other stuff. He knows how to get around the territory and can hold his own defensively, so really he doesn't need anything else. Prey is provided by warriors and he is kept busy keeping his stocks full and mixing this and that for his clanmates.
Those that disrespect Midnight quite simply get ignored in the most thorough fashion. If they are injured, he will tend them, but not speak to them. He will be shy with the poppy seeds and perhaps use a bit more force than normal, but in general it takes a lot for Midnight to get so angry with someone disrespecting him. Being born a loner and being blind, well, he's had his fair share of trials so he knows it's simply somehting he has to live with. What gets him is when others disrespect what he does, disrespect his calling or his bloodline. He's proud to be born a loner but he's also proud to be a medicine cat in StarClan's name. In general, these are the only two things he's proud of because he is a naturally meek cat. Satisfied with having enough to get by and asking for nothing unless he needs it. Those that insult the two things he holds highest in his life, well, they will taste his fury. It is quiet, like his pride, but to those it is directed at, it is a livid thing. In short, Midnight is a cat that can be your greatest ally and confidant, but at the same time he can be your greatest enemy if you treat him poorly. He holds his head high despite some of the clan's slanders and does his job without complaint, going through his black world without a hint that he wants it any other way even when he dreams of a world full of color and light.
HISTORY...Midnight's mother was a clan she-cat named Blackbird, a beauty in the clan and one of their finest huntresses. When she was hunting one night however, she came across an injured loner sheltering in a fallen log. The loners name was Koal and he was close to dying. Blackbird went back to the clan and enlisted her sister Featherheart, the clan's medicine cat at the time, to secretly help her heal the young male. When he was well, he thanked them and left. For many months, Blackbird did not see him but she thought of him often and would frequently patrol the borders in hopes of seeing him. She'd fallen for the loner in a few short weeks before he left and she had fallen hard. Life in the clans was no longer what she wanted. She wanted his easy smile, warm laugh and kind eyes. At long last, Blackbird found Koal and the pair left together. Koal took her into the territory of his mother, a blind black leopardess named Farra. Farra welcomed the young pair and agreed to share the territory she was now too old to properly defend, so long as they shared their kills with her. Within a few months, Blackbird birthed four kits, Midnight, Haze, Onyx and Dusk. Onyx and Haze the females and Midnight and Dusk the males. For a while, everything was perfect, until fire swept through the forest where they lived.
When Farra became trapped, Koal went back to save his mother, leaving Blackbird and her young kits on the edge of the blaze. For days, Blackbird waited anxiously for Koal and Farra to appear, neglecting her kits until at last she had to accept that the flames had stolen him away. Heavy-hearted, the young she-cat took her ailing kits and tried to care for them alone. Balancing hunting, protecting the kits and feeding the kits, Blackbird began to lose her grip on her children. Within weeks, Onyx and Haze fell ill and died. In the wake of their death, Dusk wandered off and was found dead, killed by some passing beast. The night after Blackbird found her dead son, she saw in Midnight's eyes a strange swirl. Over the next few days his eyes became opaque and he became confused, unable to walk straight, disoriented and wailing in fear. Blackbird only then realized that he had succumbed to the same fate as Farra, a hereditary clouding of the eyes. Her last surviving son was blind. Mourning worse than ever, Blackbird was forced to go back to her clan.
LeopardClan refused to take Blackbird back due to her betrayal when she left with Koal until the Medicine Cat at the time, an older male named Goldenclaw, spoke up and and approached the kit. He asked, and Midnight to this day remembers this question, what Midnight could see. Midnight turned his head to the tom's voice and answered loud enough for the clan to hear. "I see stars."
Goldenclaw turned to the leader and demanded that this kit be kept in the clan, declaring he was the one StarClan chose for his successor. "They've told me midnight is my time, when the stars shine bright enough for the eyes of the blind to see. This kit will be my apprentice." Unable to argue, the clan leader allowed Midnight to be kept in the clan and allowed him to preserve his name, while Blackbird was exiled, to forever be an enemy of LeopardClan. Goldenclaw took Midnight under his wing trained him as an apprentice until the night when Midnight dreamed of himself standing atop a hill and watching stars throw themselves from the sky. When he woke up, his mentor was dead. Midnight journeyed to the Star Cavern where his former mentor name him the Medicine Cat of LeopardClan and for the fist time he laid eyes on his mentor. His name never changed, remaining Midnight throughout his life, because as a kit it had been given to him at StarClan's will.
