APPEARANCE... Kiya is a rather sleek, stunning animal. She is perfect; perfectly average, that is. Her body seems small, though it rests at the approximate weight for most females; a small twenty four pounds. Her body is on the shorter range, partially because she's female, and it is only a mere twenty eight inches long, with her tail being longer than normal at thirteen inches.
Her fur is a sandy color for the most part, though it is a tad more towards yellow than brown. There are three darker stripes on her forehead, two from the top of her eye, at a peak, and a slightly lighter line perfectly in between the two at twice the length. There is a dusting of black around her upper lip, with a white patch on her chin and between the black and her nose. Her nose is all black and joined with her eyes by dark lines. The backs of her ears are black with hairs of white interspersed. The tufts of black from the tips of her ears are long, like with all caracals, and are also mixed with white hairs.
Her eyes are the non-average part about her. Most caracals have faded eyes, in brown or gold, but Kiya's are a vivid blue. There is a reason, of course; Kiya is blind. Her eyes are not clouded, but it's hard to imagine her being anything but considering her unusual blue eyes. However, because they aren't clouded, it makes it all the more eerie when she looks at you.
PERSONALITY... Kiya has never been entirely stable in her attitude. In that moment she opened her eyes and was discovered blind, everything changed for the cub. She was treated normally, almost with reverence, until that point when she was thrown aside like a rotted piece of meat, and it's affected her. Too young to know that not everyone is like that, she trusts very few. In fact, she only trusts her siblings. They've always been there and, like her, they have something wrong that leaves them as outcasts. To them, she's rather sweet and caring, always trying to help where she can and protect them, despite her blindness. She's loyal to an extreme and can, on occasion, even cling. For all her independence, she needs them anyway, if only to be there when her pride gets in her way, and she knows it. She's very rarely far from either one.
When it comes all the others in the world, she's easily described as volatile, an explosion of attitude waiting to happen. Her outbursts and defensive reactions, which often result in physical violence or harshly phrased words, often leave the world believing she's an angry kit, one who would kill if the wrong words were said. This is not true in the slightest. She's not angry so much as she is bitter that she's been cast into such a role in life, and she simply doesn't know how else to express this. Given time, she may come to accept that she will forever be unable to see, but until then there's no point expecting her to take any comments on it lightly. Even as simple and harmless a question as "do you know colors?" is met with an angry scowl and a growl, as she instantly assumes it's meant to make fun of her. In fact, colors are a particularly touchy subject with her, and it's rather best to avoid it.
She still remembers those days of blurry, bad vision from before her vision disappeared completely and clings to them, desperate for them to come back. She's not a particularly optimistic cat in regard to most things, however with this, her hope has never disappeared. She saw once; surely she will see again. It only makes sense, after all. She doesn't understand that part of her eyes has degenerated and is now ruined, something that no herb can ever fix. She can often be found laying in the sun, remembering, and when interrupted, even by her siblings, she can have a rather angry reaction, afraid that if she doesn't spend enough uninterrupted time remembering, she'll forget forever.
Her independence and pride are both key personality traits, and they're rather hard to miss as they go hand in hand. Despite never being too far from her siblings, she's always boasting she sticks around for their benefit and that she doesn't need them. Inform her of a tree or rock straight ahead, and you'd be lucky to escape with just a harsh, annoyed comment of "I know, I'm not stupid." She can smell it all and plot her path accordingly, though she isn't infallible and has walked into things before, particularly while trying to show off and prove she doesn't need anyone else.
Like most, of course, Kiyarei is just looking to be accepted and loved for who she is; desperately so. She adores her siblings, and she knows they do just that, but she doesn't want it from them. She wants some complete stranger to just take the time to get to know her, to not care about her rough and tough exterior and to realize she isn't all that different. She wants someone who isn't obligated to care for her to stick around anyway, to care for her out of choice and not requirement. She's not looking for a white knight to save her, just a loyal friend who's going to stick by her side through thick and thin.
HISTORY... Life has never been simple for Kiya. Like all cubs, she was born blind, with her eyes squeezed shut and refusing to open. Her parents always knew her siblings were defective; one deaf and one mute. That much was easily figured out. In fact, their mother tried to ditch the two once, but in her young stubbornness, Kiya refused to leave them and the female wasn't about to leave her only "healthy" kit. Except, a few weeks later, their eyes opened. The blue was stunning, beautiful and captivating. For about a quarter moon, everything seemed fine. Kiya stumbled into things occasionally, but she just as often avoided them. Her mother thought that was normal. It began to progressively get worse, and then one day, she simply didn't avoid anything. Her mother didn't know what was wrong, at first, but it quickly became apparent that, after just a short halfmoon of sight, her daughter had gone blind, a victim of particularly rapid, early onset progressive retinal atrophy. Her mother's heart instantly shattered and the female was listless after that.
The cubs' father left, unable to handle the stress of caring for the three disabled kits and the added effort of trying to bring back the one he'd loved from nothing less than a deep depression. As Kiya aged, she learned to cope. She could wander the world just fine and appear to have sight. But that didn't mean she liked it. There were violent outbursts, stubborn insistences at being able to do everything other cubs could do, days when she'd get mad at even the slightly bit of help given. It was better with her siblings, she could never get more than slightly annoyed when they underestimated her, but for her mother it was not the same. She simply didn't understand that just because her daughter was blind, it didn't mean that she had to be treated so differently.
One morning, though, Kiya woke up and discovered their mother was gone. She was never sure why; they got no explanation. Immediately, Kiya assumed it was her fault. She'd been a terrible daughter. She'd hated her mother, and she hadn't been shy in showing it. How could she be anything but the cause?
