IT was barely dawn when Sunpaw crept out of camp. It wasn't like it was particularly hard to do. Everyone was asleep, the snoring from the warrior's den nearly making Sunpaw deaf when she tip-toed past. She'd moved slowly and carefully, dodging sticks and stones that would wish to trip her up or particularly dry patches of grass that wished to crackle noisily and give her away. Technically she wasn't supposed to leave camp unless she was with a warrior, her mentor or ordered by her mentor to go run and errand or something. Too bad Sunpaw had never been so hot on rules. When she'd crept past the warrior den, she had glimpsed her brothers sprawled in the back and on the other side of the den her mentor, Elkwhisker, had been as fast asleep as all the rest. The sight had made her smirk. Weren't warriors supposed to be alert and ready for anything? Including wayward apprentices? Puh!
AS soon as she'd been past the camp boundaries, Sunpaw had taken off running. She was a bit small for her ten moons of age and had always been skinny so she was naturally fast. Runningfire took a lot of pride in that, not that he'd ever say it out loud. Sunpaw hated it though. She'd rather be strong than be super fast and she wasn't even that! There were lots of other warriors and apprentices faster than her in her opinion. Oh well. She was fast enough to get away from camp in the pre-dawn gloom without much trouble. She'd headed straight out onto the plains that made up LionClan's extensive territory, heading east as fast as her tawny legs could carry her. She didn't want to be late.
SUNPAW ran for a long time, keeping her amber gaze fixed on the eastern horizon. It was getting close. She ran faster, feeling that deep burn spreading in her young muscles that told her she was actually getting a good workout for once. Not like when she trained with Elkwhisker. He never let her do enough. He claimed she was too young. The big mouse was afraid she'd hurt herself. This though, this was freedom and it felt good. The morning breeze was cooling as she began to get warm from running but she didn't slow down to enjoy it or rest. Nope. She kept right on bounding east. At some parts of the plain, you couldn't even see her when the tall grasses rose up higher than she was tall, which for once didn't bother her. At long last, her amber eyes lit upon her goal.
IT was a rock.
IT rose sharply and suddenly out of the sun-baked ground, a plain gray boulder. It was completely unimpressive in every way but when she saw it, Sunpaw ran faster. Her lungs were tired but she didn't stop. She took a running leap, claws gripping the worn stone as she scrambled rather ungracefully up it's steep face. At last, narrow chest heaving, Sunpaw stood atop the high perch just as the sun rose up over the horizon. The savanna all around was bathed in beautiful liquid golden light that crept into every crevice and corner. It washed over Sunpaw like a wave of gentle fire. Closing her eyes at the glare, she stood up straight and breathed deep, as if she could breathe the sunlight right into her lungs and use it to fuel her every move. For a long moment she simply stood like that, dark tail tip twitching occasionally, eyes closed, head up and breathing deep and slow, as though she was meditating.
AT long last, she opened her dark gold eyes and sat back on her haunches, looking at the freshly risen sun. It was beautiful. It always was. Almost everyday Sunpaw came to this rock to watch it come up and everyday she thought the same thoughts. She wanted to be beautiful like the sun. She wanted to be strong like the sun. She wanted to be bright like the sun, fiery and so full of life like it was. She wanted to rise high above what everyone said she could and couldn't do, rise above the mundane life of being a warrior and someday hold her head high and be called Sunstar. She wanted to rule the clan the way the sun ruled the sky, like a bright and shining beacon. Watching the sun with longing in her eyes, Sunpaw let out a deep, almost sad, sigh.
SHE wanted to be special. Even when everyone said she would only ever be Sunpaw. When they said she'd be a runner and huntress and someday a queen but not much else. Her parents liked that idea. They liked normal, average, mundane. Sunpaw hated it. She wanted to shine and by StarClan, she would shine so bright it would take their breath away.
IF only it didn't feel so impossible sometimes...

It was becoming more and more common, for him to wake further and further before dawn. He could attest it to old age, or perhaps it was the worry of being leader. The second option nearly made him scoff. As if. Those worries had long since stopped waking him, simply because he learned that if he worried about everything, he'd never live past the nearest sunset. It simply didn't pay to stress out and worry over all the details. That, was perhaps the most genius part of living in a Clan. Everyone had a part, everyone had a role, and each cat performed this role, as if it were as natural as breathing. The early morning gloom was something that he honestly neither cared for, nor abhorred. It was merely a fact of life, and one of the prettier facts, if he had anything to say about a natural act of life. The tall grass brushes against his milky fur, and the first red haze of the dawn tinted him a shadow in the dawn.
Palestar had long since learned that laying in his den, trying to go back to sleep was more than futile. Once he was awake, he was awake. Despite what Morningcloud had once told him, he was not an insomniac. No matter what was being proven other wise, every night and more and more frequently, every dawn. His restless mind had prompted his sleeping legs to take him on a stroll, to help clear his mind, or at least, let him think about the things that passed for thoughts in his head. A stroll, which was more like a single cat patrol, had taken him out shortly before pre-dawn, and was going to end at dawn, at least, until he came across something that caused him to pause.
Pale eyes took on a glint of curiosity, and almost hidden ears flicked. The scent was fresh, but some time had passed, and if he were to believe his nose, it was a younger cat, an apprentice. A bold one, at that, considering the dangers that a young cat could run into, let alone go against rules set forth by those that knew these dangers. Not that he could talk, it was something apprentices from all times did. Though, those had been days when he was able to sleep past sun-rise, and had gleefully done so. The lion padded after this trail, curious as to just what an apprentice was doing awake this early, let alone out of camp.
It wasn't a complicated trail, and it seemed as if the apprentice had been in a hurry. It sort of proved to himself, just how easily interested he could be. Even if the interest was something more akin to a passing fancy. It was when he came up behind the rock, that he stopped. It appeared that the wandering apprentice was enjoying the sunrise. Not something that was condemnable, but still. Pale whiskers twitched in amusement, and for a moment, he pondered the wisdom of just letting her be. No, that would be far too easy. " If I'm not mistaken, apprentices are not supposed to be out of camp without a warrior. Forgive me, but I do not believe I am wrong."
He circled around the rock, to peer at the other feline, cool and calculating. He wasn't overly fond of apprentices or kits, but he had to admit, those that had spirit, were worth notice. Especially those that were bold enough to stare you down and show no shame. However, most tended to bow beneath the gaze of most warriors, let alone any leader, and the proud and spirited were hard to find. It may be considered odd for a leader to speak to an apprentice, but when one comes across something they often not see, it simply, lures the mind and attention into a tar pit, to be trapped and stuck.

'IF I'm not mistaken, apprentices are not supposed to be out of camp without a warrior. Forgive me, but I do not believe I am wrong.'
AT the sound of the voice rumbling behind her, Sunpaw very nearly groaned aloud. Fan-freaking-tastic. She'd been caught. By Palestar no doubt. Oh yes, she knew who was behind her before he circled around, his pale white-gold fur practically glowing in the sunlight. It was unusual, probably one of the most rare things of all, for a leader to pay much attention to apprentices other than their naming as apprentices and warriors and whatnot but Sunpaw hadn't forgotten Palestar. She'd actually often watched him around camp. Not necessarily to be creepy, but to learn. More than once she'd wished to be his apprentice instead of Elkwhisker's. After all, if she wanted to be a leader someday, who better to teach her than the actual clan leader? Wasn't it often said that leader apprentices usually later became leaders themselves? It was at least more common than apprentices from second-rate warriors like Elkwhisker.
RIGHT now though, Sunpaw had to bite her tongue to keep from groaning. She was busted. Caught out of camp without her mentor or another warrior. By the clan leader no less. Well, at least she was only breaking one rule. It wasn't like she was outside of the borders. This time. She'd done it before but not gotten caught. This rock was firmly planted in LionClan's territory so at least Sunpaw couldn't be accused of anything shady. The clan was full of gossip and Sunpaw saw no reason to give it unnecessary ammunition against her. A lot of warriors already thought her too troublesome to be any good.
HER dark amber eyes found Palestar's without hesitation, head angling down to look at him from her perch. She wasn't much taller than him sitting on the rock which kind of irked her. Would she forever be so much smaller than everyone else? Where was the justice in that, StarClan? Pushing the thought aside, Sunpaw sat up straighter. "I'm not doing anything else wrong though," she reasoned coolly, in an almost challenging voice. "I knew it was safe here and I'm still in the clan territory. I'm not mousebrained, I looked for anything dangerous before I came here."
THAT was a half lie of course. Sunpaw had simply run to her favorite sunrise-watching rock without so much as sparing a sniff for the area around it. She'd been in a hurry, what could she say? If she spent time actually looking for dangerous things around her perch, she would have missed the sunrise and possibly gotten hurt anyway for all her trouble. At least this way she got to enjoy the sunrise before something came along to kill her. Normally when she wasn't in a hurry, Sunpaw would be a little bit more careful. A little. Nothing was ever out here, at least nothing Sunpaw had ever found need to worry about. There had been a snake once, coiled up under the rock, but it hadn't so much as hissed at her. Today though, she'd been in too much of a hurry to bother with useless sniffing or slowing down to take a look around before she pounced onto her perch.
PALESTAR didn't need to know that though. He'd probably suspect, without a doubt. A lot of warriors complained about Sunpaw and at some point or another he'd probably heard something of the trouble she caused. Sneaking out was probably the least of her transgressions just because she liked to do things her way. It didn't make her a bad cat, at least not in Sunpaw's humble opinion. What was the point of waiting around for her slow-poke mentor when she could be doing something else? It wasn't her fault Elkwhisker was so lazy. So what if she scrapped with another apprentice in the camp? They were practicing their fighting skills! What did it matter if she got up before dawn? She wasn't hurt anybody. What did Palestar think he'd have to gain by lecturing her? She'd do it again in a heartbeat, probably tomorrow morning, half from habit and half just to spite him simply because she could do it and get away with it.
WHAT was the worst he could do anyway? Take away gathering privileges? Puh, they were boring anyway and most of the time Elkwhisker didn't take her anyway. Make her clean the elder's den? She'd have to do it eventually anyway. So, without fear, she met his gaze and wrapped her tail placidly around her front paws. She wasn't scared of him and she wouldn't bow her head like normal 'good' apprentices did. She'd never liked that rule just because she didn't like bowing to anybody.

Half truths were always the best friend of anyone trying to get out of potential trouble. To put too much truth into a lie, and you'd be bad off, however, not enough, and the trouble you'd be in would be even worse in some situations. He could remember being her age, and having to keep up with all the tall tales he had told recently. It never seemed to end too often in his favor. If anything, it was often worse than what would of happened originally, but Palestar rather doubted that the apprentice was telling any big lie. After all, it was a lovely sunrise.
It wasn't so much the fact that she was amusing that made his whiskers twitch in amusement, it much more along the lines that she simply had the audacity to stand up for herself, and tell him exactly what she was doing, and that she really could take care of herself. While she was talking, he eyed her. Honestly, he was having a rather hard time remembering her name. Apprentices tended to blend together after awhile, and she was nothing more than another blip in his memory, someone he had progressed through life, without really caring one way or another what she dreamed or thought. Such was the way of life, nowadays. However, as she finished her explanation, a bell rang in the back of his mind. As if he had heard something about someone who was prone to causing a little trouble here and there. For a moment, his thoughts chased one another through corridors of his memory, trying to remember what it was he'd been told, that was so intent on bugging the hell out of him.
Ah. Sunpaw. That was the name he was looking for, and as he tilted his head, just a tad, to look at her, he could help the curious gleam in his eye. The was the apprentice with so much spirit in her. Now, if only the rest of his Clan had such heart. Then perhaps, the days would not be quite so dull in the long run. An apprentice like her could either be a large contribution to the Clan, or she would end up hindering it in her brash ways, causing more trouble than she was truly worth putting up with. He sincerely hoped she would live to see her warrior naming, if only to see the trouble she would further cause. This, was a tiny transgression, in the long list of transgressions that had been transgressed. However, if there was one thing that he was aware of, it was that tiny transgressions quickly bloomed into much larger, and much more dangerous things. Which is why, punishment was a happy necessity.
With a grunt, the leader sat, head held high as he regarded the young lion. He could give her all the props she deserved, but that didn't change the duty that his rank charged him with. " Ah, so that makes it's all right then. Because you're within the territory, and you're not doing anything dangerous. Alright then, I'll just leave you to it, shall I?" His tones oozed sarcasm, and a touch cooler than what they had been moments before. He wasn't pleased, but it wasn't his place rant and rave at her. That was her mentor's, speaking of which, he planned on having a discussion with Elkwhisker about his apprentice. It didn't seem as if this was her first time doing such a thing. " Tell me, Sunpaw, you have dreams, don't you? Hopes for the future? I'm sure you don't need me telling you how quickly your tiny life can be snuffed out, and then, those dreams will mean nothing. The call of a bird caught the lion's attention for a moment, and he cast a look around, before resuming his gaze on the apprentice upon the rock. He couldn't just let her get away with this little adventure, regardless if this wasn't her first time or not. " I'm not going to punish you, Sunpaw. No, I cannot bring myself to punish a fellow admirer or the sunrise." Twisting slightly, Palestar twisted to admire the sunrise himself, when he twisted, left the left side of his face faced towards the apprentice, and the ragged scars that tugged at the corner of his mouth and down his neck were towards her.
After a moment, he turned back to her, calm and steady, once again, his cool gaze drifted over the smaller lion. He honestly could remember being her age and not wanting to wait for everyone else, but he learned his lesson, though there were many of them, and they each seemed to be harsher then the last. " No, I won't punish you, however, I will punish Elkwhisker. After all, he does so enjoy sleeping in, doesn't he? You will both join the dawn patrol. Starting tomorrow. " With that he stood again, and started making his way away from the sun-watching perch, towards camp. " Perhaps, when you realize that every action you make effects someone else, you'll be ready to be a warrior. Until then, well, let's just start with a moon, shall we?" With that, he continued on his way, until he remembered something. Pausing, he turned and looked over his shoulder, Sunpaw nothing but a dark silhouette on the rock. "Oh, an Sunpaw? I'll leave you to tell Elkwhisker exactly why you two are joining the patrol. You have until sunset, before I make it both patrols."

ROUNDED auds twitched as the leader spoke. She didn't miss the change in his voice and knew that even if he said he wasn't going to punish her, she was in trouble. Not as much trouble as she could be in, but she was still in it. Her dark tail tip twitched against her front paws as Sunpaw watched Palestar turn his head to look at the sunrise for himself. There was an ugly scar carved along his neck from some fight or another, one probably fought long before Sunpaw was even born. Sunpaw didn't believe in coincidences, not for a second. She knew what hr was trying to do, talking about dreams and how quickly they could be snuffed out to nothing if she died. Dark amber orbs traced the old scar, tail tip twitching again. She wasn't stupid. She knew she did dangerous things but she did them because nobody else would and if nobody else did, things got boring. The world became stagnant and dull, the clan trapped in one place. A lot like Palestar it seemed.
THE punishment of dawn patrols wasn't truly a punishment, not to Sunpaw. She was obviously a naturally early riser. She always had been. She used to drive her mother nearly mad because she'd be awake before dawn when she was still in the nursery. Too bad Palestar was probably smart enough to know that dawn patrol was no punishment for her. That was probably why he made her drag along Elkwhisker and tell him about the punishment all by herself. A frown curved Sunpaw's muzzle but for once she said nothing. She simply sat up a little straighter. Great. Just great. Elkwhisker would be furious because not only had she been sneaking out but she'd gotten caught by Palestar and Palestar would probably 'talk' to Elkwhisker which mean her mentor was going to get dragged through the thorn bushes by the clan leader. Honestly, didn't Palestar have more important things to deal with than bothering mentors that had nothing to do with their apprentice's mischief? Jeez.
"FINE," Sunpaw muttered finally, looking determinedly away from the white leader to the golden sunrise.
SUNPAW'S claws flexed, scraping the stone below her. She wanted to say something else to Palestar, something impressive and strong and wise for her age but he'd probably just think her a silly apprentice trying to act all grown up. He was an old geezer anyway, anything she had to say, he'd probably already heard from a million apprentices before her. Still, the impulse to make a mark thrummed inside Sunpaw's mind. She always wanted to make an impact, make a mark, show the world that she was there and she wasn't going anywhere. Nobody ever believed her though. Not her parents. Not Elkwhisker. Not even Palestar. The tips of her curved claws dug into the stone a little as anger boiled up in her belly and burned through her veins. What did they know? She could do it and she would and Palestar, all of them really, would hear her someday whether they liked it or not.
STANDING up on the boulder, Sunpaw turned to look after the retreating leader. "You said my dreams can be snuffed out if I die," Sunpaw called, raising her voice a bit to be heard. "You act like that's something that's easy, but the dreams I have, they wouldn't die. Someone else would find them, dream them, think them. You did, at one point. Dreams don't die just because a body does."
RUNNINGFIRE, her older brother, had told her that once. He'd always been the better with words between her older siblings. He had a gentile attitude and a swift mind to match is running speed. Dreams don't die when a body dies, they fly free until someone else finds them. Maybe that was why Sunpaw had no fear? Her dreams wuouldn't die. It wasn't that easy. Millions of leaders had dreamed her dreams before her and died with them so that Sunpaw could someday have them and hold them close and let them light a fire in her belly to keep her going. Maybe Palestar thought she was immature and Elkwhisker thought she was arrogant and her parents thought she was a silly kit too small for her big dreams but Sunpaw didn't care. She'd show them someday.

There There were many who had lived and died, and many more who would do the same in the coming seasons, but there were only a few who truly had the heart to live their lives as they should be lived. The words that the rather bold apprentice had called after him, had actually pulled him up. She was right, for one so young. A dream didn't die just because the body was broken or gone. A dream was a contagious as an illness, and twice as deadly. There were very few things in the world that someone would die for, and unfortunately, dreams were one of those things. It was good to dream, there were so many now days, that had no dreams, and were just moving to the rythm of the seasons. Their lives were nothing more than cogs and gears in life, and until someone threw a wrench into it, things would continue in a way that really, wasn't all that appealing, not if you were opposed to monotony. Sadly, many were much, much closer to openly embracing the easiness it provided. It made lazy warriors, and it made lazy leaders. Perhaps he had fallen into a rut, just as much as his Clan had.
Sad to think that it took an apprentice to shove it in his face to make him realize this fact, and yet, he knew that there was nothing he could truly do about it. Liar, the whisper was quiet, and it borrowed a voice he had once learned to rely on to tell the truth. His heart, his Morningcloud. She had been his voice on honesty and truth when she had been alive, breathing, and warm against his side. He'd become colder, more cynical since his mate's death, nothing more than the shell he had been as a young warrior. He was closer to a cold leader, who cared very little for the individuals in his Clan. After all, they weren't there to be buddies with him, and he wasn't there to personally protect all of them. He was there to keep order, and they were there to defend their territory, homes and their lives. The Clan life had lost it's vibrancy, in the seasons that had past. Though, in the deepest part of his heart, he could still feel the coal glowing bright still, that love and loyalty for their way of life. He may not be able to speak to Morningcloud on whim, and he may spend his strolls simply remembering her, but in his mind, she still walked with him. Since her death, he heard her voice only when his mind dreamed it, when he knew she would jump all over him for his thoughts and actions.
Pausing, the white leader turned over his shoulder to look at the proud apprentice, and he felt a tug at his mind. She reminded him of those he'd known over his life, and Palestar had a feeling she'd only go up in life, if she managed to keep her head long enough. Slowly, the leader dipped his head to the apprentice, in acknowledgement. " Well said, Sunpaw. Your words are true, and you'd be better off remembering them, no matter how dark life gets. " With that, he swung his head back around, and started away again. However, another thought paused him again, and the white leader found himself once again turning to regard the apprentice. " You dream big, Sunpaw. You're also young, in the eyes of the Clan. It would do you good to remember that the sun has barely risen on your life. Dreams can change, no matter your determination. If it was easy to obtain, it wouldn't be a dream. Keep your fire. It was advice that he had been given himself, when he was younger than she, and at the time, he had scoffed, but later, oh, how he had heard those words ring.

'DREAMS change.'
OUT of all the lecturing Palestar did, those two words were the only ones that struck Sunpaw. When they struck, they stung but she refused to flinch. Her claws dug into the sun-warmed rock under her paws but she did not flinch. She would not. Things like that, they sounded like quitter talk to her and she was anything but a quitter. You could ask any apprentice. They'd call her arrogant and bossy and loud all they wanted but they wouldn't call her a quitter. Quitting just wasn't an option in her young mind. The dreams she had now, they would still be her dreams many moons from now when she got her warrior name. She'd hold on to those dreams and do everything she could to show StarClan that she deserved to someday be named Sunstar of LionClan.
DID that make her selfish or silly? Maybe. But it was her dream. Nobody would get in the way. She would work as hard as she could, just for the sake of proving everyone wrong. She wasn't just some upstart kit looking to raise a fuss. No. She was out to change the world, for the better. She wouldn't let LionClan fall into a rut the way Palestar did. She wouldn't look at life and think it was lackluster and dull. No. Never. Someday. Someday she'd prove that she could do it, that she could dream as big as the sky and make it work, if only by sheer force of will. Runningfire and Hawktail, her big brothers, they believed her. Believed in her. Smiled and lifted her up when Elkwhisker tried to beat her down to reality or other warriors and apprentices scoffed and laughed. She'd show the world she could do it. Even if they didn't want to see it, didn't want to hear it.
SUNPAW wanted to challenge Palestar again and show him how mature and insightful she was but the words couldn't come. Instead she clenched her jaw, sharp fangs piercing her tongue so she could taste metallic blood in her mouth. Her paws flexed, flexing her claws in turn but she did not speak. She had nothing to say to him. He was an old stick in the mud just like every other cat in the clan. Who would want to be like that? What good was a heart of all you did was think about how broken it was? Forge a new fire to piece it back together again, scars and all, and move on. Was it really so hard?
RECLINING on her haunches, Sunpaw stubbornly turned her head so that her amber gaze found the sun sitting comfortably on its horizon as it was beginning its daily trek through the sky. It's vivid light burned her eyes but she didn't look away for a long moment before closing her eyes and hiding her young eyes from its harsh light. The light felt warm on her tawny fur, still lightly dappled from kithood. Maybe it was just her imagination but Sunpaw felt energized by the sun. She always had.
SOMEDAY she'd become like the sun, burning bright and strong and fierce for her clan. They'd see the fires of her determination and loyalty and be in awe of it. At times she would burn quietly, giving off that warm loving light that a mother was supposed to have, that supportive aura that apprentices looked for in their ideal mentors and then envied others for when they wound up with the cold and disregarding old warriors. She wanted to be all of that and more. She wanted to bloom and grow like the wildflowers in greenleaf...but sometimes it felt impossible. Sometimes LionClan felt stifling and suffocating and harsh and barren, like the wasteland at the very edge of the territory. It felt like that thicket where only thorny plants dared to grow, gnarled and unhappy.
SUNPAW opened her eyes and slid her front legs forward so she was laying in a sphinx-like pose atop her rock. She had her back to Palestarn ow, not that he'd probably ever notice. Her tail came to curl around her side and her little head rested on her paws looking out toward the east. There was a subtle and almost invisible, like a smoldering ember still red hot with fire but easily overlooked. Someday she would stand tall and proud, a warrior for the clan to be proud of. For now though, she was laid low as an apprentice with nothing to look forward to except telling her mentor that they were stuck on dawn patrol for the next moon.
A disgruntled half groan, half sigh worked its way from Sunpaw as she buried her muzzle between her front paws and closed her eyes again.
