EVER since returning to camp, Adderstar had had a difficult time finding peace when the sun went down. For as smoothly as his naming ceremony went, he would have expected a bit of time to adjust to his new situation. Strangely however, he kept dreaming vividly, disjointed snatches of nightmares and dreams all wrapped into each other until he couldn't tell one from the other. At first he had chalked it up to sleeping in a den that still smelled of Wrenstar, the previous leader. He'd requested help from the medicine cat, knowing he couldn't afford to be sleepy and droopy during the day. The helpful healer had left bundles of herbs in the den to help abate the lingering scent of LeopardClan's last leader. After three more days of wild churning dreams, Adderstar had shredded the herb bundles and kicked them out with his old bedding, changing it himself rather than having an apprentice do it.
THE clan had sensed his ill mood and kept a wary distance from the newly named leader as day by day the fire in his eyes brightened and the black temper swirling around him almost like a tangible beast grew bigger and bigger. Adderstar knew he shouldn't be letting bad dreams run away with him like this but with each passing hour it grew harder and harder to control his rapidly souring temper. He was grouchy when he was tired, it was a well known fact and he did very little to curb his irritation. He left tasks to his deputy and patrolled and hunted for hours on his own in an attempt to not only avoid unnecessary outbreaks of rage but also in an attempt to tire himself out. His running theory was that if he was exhausted, he might actually sleep dreamlessly or at the very least be tired enough to sleep through the nightmares and black dreams. So far that theory wasn't working and it was nearly dark again.
CURRENTLY Adderstar was crouched on the edge of camp with a half eaten thrush between his front paws. His golden eyes flickered around camp, watching as his fellow leopards milled about after a day of hunting, training and patrolling. Across camp, the young leader could spot his own apprentice, Crescentpaw, crouched beside a dark-pelted apprentice named Ravenpaw. He was glad to see it. At least she was in camp and not out moping in the forest where a bear could eat her or something when she was too busy being miserable. Glancing at he sky, Adderstar watched through narrowed eyes as the sun sank below the horizon and gave way to night with its mysterious shadows and dark dreams. Tonight the sun was chased away by clouds rolling in from the west, thick and heavy with the promise of rain. Already Adderstar could hear thunder growling overhead. LeopardClan needed rain, needed it badly. It was the height of Greenleaf and little rain had fallen. Sprinkles and drizzles here and there but never enough to truly wet the land. Trees were beginning to droop and with each passing day the temperatures grew hotter.
LOOKING up at the dark clouds rolling in, the golden pelted tom couldn't be too hopeful for a good rain. The clouds, while thick and forbidding, seemed reluctant to release the heavy downpour LeopardClan really needed. Adderstar's claws flexed on the soft ground under his paws at the thought. If they didn't watch out, stray lightning strikes might become a problem. Flash-fires in dry weather like this could easily turn into wildfires that swept through entire territories. Since the LeopardClan's closest neighbor was LionClan...to say the least it could be a disaster for both clans since LionClan consisted mostly of dry scrubland this time of year.
ADDERSTAR didn't dare voice his concerns to anyone since there was still hope that tonight's clouds might bring some relief. Just a dampening of the ground would appease some warriors of whatever ill ease they might feel. Still, sitting up to watch the clouds roll in and block out whatever stars that were trying to shine, Adderstar couldn't help but feel ill at ease. His tail came to wrap around his side, the black tip just resting at his paws as his gaze fixed skyward. What a season to have as his first as leader, a near drought. If StarClan was testing him, it was highly irritating, as though he didn't have enough to deal with without having to keep a constant eye on the weather and dodge nightmares each and every night. Add in mentoring Crescentpaw and reassuring the clan that he was more than capable of being their leader and you had one irritable, tired, grouchy Adderstar. After so long of watching rainless clouds clogging the sky, Adderstar swats his half eaten thrush away and rises to his feet. He crosses the clearing with long strides and slips into the den that once was Wrenstar's.
IT'S dark and cooler inside than it is outside. The smell of fresh moss and bird feathers from his nest waft to Adderstar's nose. It's odd how he's gotten more or less used to sleeping alone already after so many moons of sleeping surrounded by fellow apprentices or fellow warriors. Recently he couldn't have been more grateful for the solitude each time he wakes with a jump from a nightmare with a hiss or snarl lodged in his throat. Circling the nest a few times, Adderstar finally drops into it with a flop, facing the entrance. He can see a sliver of the shadowy camp, a few warriors still milling about, flitting across his vision before disappearing a moment later. Strangely for all the nights he's been grateful for the solitary den, Adderstar is almost tempted to go join them if only for the feeling of another cat's warm pelt pressed against his as he slept. Who knows? Maybe it would stop the nightmares? Sighing, Adderstar closed his eyes and curled his tail over his paws and tried to block it all out instead.

INKSPOT
den. Inkspot despised that a single feline could take claim over a den. Sure, bring the leaders and medicine cats closer to Starclan, but what right had they to stay so far from the warriors? Shouldn't they sleep with their hunters and fighters, the heart of the clan? No, obviously leaders were fed up with themselves, condemned to a solitude place where they only had themselves. A part of Inkspot desired that, and she rolled the idea of Inkstar around in her mind before the crackling of thunder and lightning snapped her head back to the sky with a hiss, fur bristling. "Silence, nature." Growled the she-cat, regardless of whether or not nature could actually hear or react. [ notes; x ] [/ul][/blockquote]

FOR a long while, Adderstar merely laid in his den trying to turn his mind off. Stray thoughts poked their way in however, flashing like lightning strikes and bringing new images to the forefront of his mind. What should he do about the streams that were slowly dwindling to mere trickles of water? Was there anything to do? Would the clouds overhead finally bring relief? What about his nightmares? Did they mean something or were they just silly dreams fueled by stress and a too active imagination? How should he handle Crescentpaw when he was still stumbling a little from Shellpaw's death? Around and around the questions went, spiraling into darker and darker spaces in Adderstar's mind. Without thinking, the golden tom began flexing his claws in the soft moss and bird feathers that made up his nest. Finally he opened his eyes and decided sleep wasn't in the cards at this moment in time despite how tired he felt, physically and mentally.
AS thunder rumbled darkly overhead, the young leader rose from his den. Shaking off stray bits of moss or clinging feathers, he slid back out. It was darker still outside, clouds consuming the stars and growling threateningly overhead like some massive, mysterious enemy. Glancing at the sky, Adderstar sent a rare prayer to StarClan for rain. Even just a little. Anything to dampen the ground underfoot and perhaps bring prey back out in a bit more force. While the clan was far from starving, everyone knew that lack of rain meant lack of prey after so long.
GLANCING around him, Adderstar found the camp clearing mostly empty except for one cat. It seemed everyone else had decided to flee to the dens to avoid what they hoped would be a long downpour. His golden eyes lit on the shadowed form of Inkspot, one of his warriors. It felt strange to think of any warriors has his but Adderstar was trying to get used to it. Commanding patrols and the like were almost second nature after serving as Wrenstar's deputy but being leader brought a whole new relationship into the game. He was set apart, divided from the warriors by StarClan's approval and influx of dreams and omens. Either way, Inkspot looked about as pleased about the weather as Adderstar felt as he watched her shot a scathing glare at the sky and growl something he couldn't hear. As if in reply, thunder rumbled again overhead. Strangely the sight amused Adderstar, a difficult feat indeed. Who was this cat that challenged the sky?
FOR a moment, the tom merely stood regarding Inkspot from near his den. He didn't know her well despite having trained alongside her. He'd been too busy focusing on training and then being deputy to really worry about those around him. He did know she had something of a temper, though not quite as well known as his. When Adderstar went into a rage, everyone fled for fear of his claws and fangs. When Inkspot got it under her skin to get mad, others backed away for fear of her harsh barbed words. Adderstar had never witnessed such an event but he had a feeling she wasn't too happy right now. Glancing skyward, Adderstar decided that if he wasn't going to get any sleep he might as well make sure Inkspot wasn't going to verbally abuse anyone that couldn't take it just because they walked past her.
AMBLING toward the irritated leopardess, Adderstar tried to think of something to say. Words had never really been his strong suit. When he was angry, oh he could make anyone burst into tears, but on a normal basis Adderstar just wasn't a speech giver. He wasn't a suave tom that could sweep a she-cat off her paws, oh no. Adderstar had been raised and trained to be strong and fast and deadly. He was a fantastic fighter, quick and agile and able to think on his feet. He got the job done with as few blows as possible. Talking to clanmates though, well, you'd think someone had cut his tongue out or turned him into a fool. Without anger to fuel his words, Adderstar was a surprisingly quiet cat, choosing to observe.
"I doubt growling at the sky will get your point across," Adderstar said, mentally flinching. He probably sounded like a fool but outwardly he kept his expression more or less blank as he reclined on his haunches near Inkspot, carefully out of reach if she chose to take a swipe at him.
AS he sat nearby, the young tom wracked his brain trying to remember anything he did know about Inkspot. What he came up with was a sad amount. She was around his age and she had a temper. Sad really, how Adderstar could tell you every weak spot in every other cat on the planet and yet he knew next to nothing about one of his own clanmates. In his mind, he made a mental note to correct that situation since it was unseemly for a clan leader to be so unfamiliar with their own warriors. It was like Crescentpaw, he had no idea how to handle the hot-and-cold apprentice when he had so little in the way of patients and knew only the bare minimum about her. In fact, Adderstar paid little attention to anyone unless they were attacking him or posed a threat so really it was perhaps a healthy thing to go without Adderstar's notice. If he noticed you it meant you'd done something dangerous that he would have to get rid of you for. That probably worked well as a deputy and warrior but now he was a leader, the expectations of his awareness of the clan was different now.

INKSPOT
[/s] The leopardess's fur bristled for a mere moment as she was unaware that Adderstar had even approached her, too busy being angry at the skies for spooking her in the first place. That anger only transferred onto the leader now, frustrated that he'd also taken her by surprise. Leader or no leader, it wasn't going to cause the warrior to bite her tongue and silence her thoughts; as if she'd so such a thing. The thought itself seemed so degrading of personality and self respect - in fact the mere thought depressed her. "Neither will telling me that." Mumbled Inkspot as her fur began to lay flat again. Still no rain had come and waiting was irritating for the 'ess. Unusually impatient on that particular night was causing the tension to build. However, she doubted that an attack would occur from her attitude. At least not an attack that is the cause of her own claws initially. The she-cat shifted her weight from side to side, rolling her shoulders and yawning before deciding it was in best interest to at least try to continue the conversation, the one that Adderstar had started. "And what brings o'mighty Adderstar from the comforts of his den?" Inkspot questioned without attempting to hide the sting in her words. [ notes; yay :3 ] [/ul][/blockquote]

AT Inkspot's snide response, Adderstar couldn't quite stop the fur along his shoulders from bristling. Just a little. Even as deputy, Adderstar hadn't stood for such talk, although he was no stranger to it. His first instinct was, naturally, to snap back with all the poisonous barbs he was so famous for. Now though, he was a leader. He had to show more restraint when it came to rising to bait dangled in front of him by snide she-warriors. Instead, Adderstar forced his hackles down and regarded Inkspot with decided disinterest as she snarled about what would bring him from the comfort of his den. Comfort indeed, alone and in the dark, although that feeling was beginning to get all too common for the young male leopard. Warriors got to sleep together in each other's warmth and comfort. It was a familiar place and sensation even during their apprenticeship, getting used to sleeping around others. All of the sudden, Wrenstar is gone and Adderstar is set even more apart from his clanmates than he ever was as a deputy.
"APPARENTLY not the good company," Adderstar sneered, twitching an ear in an uninterested fashion. Glancing skyward, Adderstar tried to judge if he'd be able to sleep any time tonight. Right now it sure didn't feel like it. Might as well leave Inkspot to stew in whatever had her tail in a twist, Adderstar really wasn't in the mood for a fight tonight. A first, but true none the less.
STANDING up, Adderstar stretched, arching his back and sliding his front legs forward. Claws extended and kneaded the ground for a moment before he straightened up and turned away from Inkspot. He was too tired and dragged through the mill to bother picking a useless fight with a useless warrior with an attitude problem. Normally Adderstar was all for a challenge, up in arms the second someone so much as looked at him wrong. His fierce pride and rather reckless nature combined at the slightest inclination that there might be a chance to fight it out with someone. He didn't care if it was a clanmate or a loner or a rogue,
ADDERSTAR had always been the type to attack first and ask questions never, whether it be a verbal or physical assault. It was one of his father's worse habits to be passed on. Hookedclaw had been known for his horrid temper and brash attitude, his fight-first nature and cutting glares. The hulking leopard had had all the bulk to back up every threat he made. Of his children, Adderstar had gotten the worst of it, showing the clan just who was Hookedclaw's son. His sisters, Amberpaw and Dapplefur had taken more after his much kinder mother, Spottedpool. Dapplefur had had a tongue and temper when you got her riled up but Adderstar couldn't remember ever seeing Amberpaw get mad at anyone. Possibly from a combination of stress and lack of sleep, Adderstar was feeling quite bi-polar. One moment he was ready to slit someone's throat, the next he was too tired to think about it beyond wistful thinking. Strange how that worked out in the end. When he was actually given someone up for a fight, he ended up too tired to bother.
LEAVING Inkspot to whatever was wrong with her, Adderstar padded toward the camp entrance. Maybe a hunt would tire him out enough to sleep? That would be nice, even if he ended up waking up halfway through the night with a yowl of fright or pain stuck in his throat. Half a night of sleep was better than no sleep at all. Pushing Inkspot out of his mind and smothering the nightmares in the back of his mind, Adderstar slid out of camp into the nighttime forest, hoping for some solitude and a touch of peace. Whatever StarClan was planning on throwing his way, Adderstar knew it would be big and needed to think of some way to avoid it. Cats like Inkspot and her ilk weren't going to help but solitude would, he hoped. Sleep definitely would but that was only a fifty-fifty chance.

INKSPOT
[/s] Inkspot's ears fell upon her skull, her throat closing up in some sort of twisted and angry pain. A small hiss that sounded deformed slipped her partially open mouth that hung there before looking away from in, lashing her tail in frustration. Maybe it was frustration at herself and not him, the 'ess wasn't sure, considering most of her anger was spurred from depressing thoughts and self doubt. For a while she laid there after Adderstar had left the camp. The warrior rolled around, lashed her tail and continued to hate the night sky. She had company for once, had, and managed to lose it because she couldn't control her temper. Not that she should care, no, why should she? The leopardess thought she was better off alone anyway. As a raindrop fell from the sky, finally breaking the long wait, Inkspot decided to go after Adderstar to wherever he'd gone off to. When outside of the camp the rain began to come down more heavily, wind picking up slightly and ruffling the fur of the feline. A hiss emitted from her, claws raking against the sky as if to threaten the clouds to cease what they were doing at once. If they could hear or see her, they didn't listen or pay note to her. Why would anyone? The warrior was one of a million, her life didn't matter anymore than the next! But as the wind and rain continued to pick up, clear that the storm was truly beginning to rage like the tempers of the leader and warrior only so shortly before, Inkspot began to worry. What if it flooded and she couldn't get back or if the wind became so strong she got swept away? Now worried for herself -- and Adderstar, regardless of his temper -- turned around to head back, but swung her head around as she called out his name. [ notes; i figured a bit of a storm may spike more muse up? maybe adderstar and inkspot can get caught up in a bit of a flood or something. idunno. o: ] [/ul][/blockquote]

ADDERSTAR didn't make it far from camp when a loud rumble of thunder announced the clouds overhead were for more than just show. Pausing in his trek, the golden-pelted tom looked up. Darkness crawled all around him, above, below and on all sides. Overhead though, his gaze followed flickers and fits of lightning as it glanced from cloud to cloud. All he could say was that he was thankful the lightning was staying in the clouds and not leaping down to torch the kindle-dry LeopardClan territory. For now at least. As he continued to watch, a raindrop plopped on his nose making his whiskers twitch. One raindrop was followed by a second, third, fourth. With each passing second the rain fell harder, going from a few random drops to buckets in a few minutes. Of course, Adderstar didn't let a little thing like getting wet bother him so he didn't waste time trying to run for cover. Instead he kept his head tilted back and watched, forks of lightning reflected in his eyes. A sane, or at least normal warrior would run back to camp, if only for the safety of it. Adderstar had never been a fan of normal and actually quite enjoyed a good storm.
STORMS were powerful, dark and intimidating to most cats. For the most part, he would agree with that statement. Lightning could fell a tree on an unaware warrior or set the land alight in an instant. Rain reduced visibility and could bring about illness if a cat stayed out in it too long. Thunder wasn't that big of a deal to Adderstar but he could appreciate the intelligence of a patrol trying to invade during a thunder-heavy storm. With the rain washing away scents and thunder to cover footsteps or accidental blunders, it would be hard to keep track of particularly stealthy enemies during a battle. Looking up at the sky sometimes, it even looked like a storm was a battle, some sort of distant celestial beings fighting it out over territory or political issues. Maybe that was a thought for kits or wistful apprentices but Adderstar didn't really care.
'ADDERSTAR!'
ROUNDED auds twitched as the faint call was nearly drowned out by a snarl of thunder. Turning his burning gaze from the warring clouds and thunder and lightning overhead, he turned his head to look around. The undergrowth all around him was drenched, brittle dry leaves broken and abused by the heavy rainfall. The sounds of water all around seemed determined to smother any other sounds. For a moment, Adderstar entertained the faint call as just being a figment of his imagination since he doubted anyone would be out in this mess and the only cat that had seen him leaving camp would have been Inkspot and it was quite unlikely that she would have trailed after him. Leader or not he knew she had a great distaste for a great many cats and he was more than likely near the top of the list, if only because he was a leader.
ROLLING his shoulders, the dappled tom shrugged off the sound. It was probably his imagination or some strange echo from the thunder. Turning away from camp again, Adderstar continued padding through the softening ground. Golden paws quickly turned brown with mud as the long-dry ground rejected extra water. Dancing between the puddles that gathered between tree roots, Adderstar worked his way uphill until soft soil turned into stone under his feet. Adderstar kept climbing through the stormy gloom, barely able to see more than a few tail-lengths in front of his nose. Still he kept going, up and up until he spotted one of his favorite perches. Leaving the trees, Adderstar strode up to a large boulder perched near a cliff. From atop it, you could see the entire southern portion of LeopardClan's mountainous forests and deep shadowy valleys. Despite the rain and darkness, Adderstar leaped on top of it and reclined on his haunches as lightning forked the sky overhead and thunder kept growling.
A long time ago, as a new apprentice, Adderstar had come here with his mentor, Brightstar. It had been a favorite thinking spot of hers, one her mentor had shown her apparently. It was supposed to be something of a tradition, Adderstar supposed, but he had never been overly close with his apprentices. Mossheart and Shellpaw and Crescentpaw, they were all well enough as far as apprentices were. There were definitely worse, but Adderstar wasn't good at getting attached enough to share something like his private sanctuary with anyone. Especially not since it was his last link to Brightstar. Sitting up here helped him feel closer to her when he felt confused or unsure of how to proceed. Since seeing Brightstar cloaked in StarClan's light though, Adderstar had felt slightly more intune with his former mentor, now certain she was keeping an eye on him since she had approved of him becoming leader. That had taken a huge weight off of Adderstar's shoulders. Now, turning his amber gaze to the sky, he regarded the snarling clouds and flickering lightning strikes. Here he felt closer than ever to StarClan after his naming but farther than it was possible to get from his clanmates.

'I thought you would've returned to camp.'
"I will eventually." Was Adderstar's only reply, accompanied by a low rumble of thunder.
GOLDEN eyes flashed as lightning struck through the sky while Adderstar turned his head. Standing near the base of the boulder he was perched on was none other than Inkspot. She looked different though, than her normal sharp self. She looked edgy, yes, but in a different manner than a warrior irritated by apprentices or grumpy from having to get up early and do a dawn patrol. This sort of edgy was one Adderstar was familiar with, like the first time he'd been waiting in an ambush to attack some rogues in the territory. It was...fear. The idea of a cat like Inkspot being afraid had Adderstar's ears twitching and eyes flicking to the shadowy undergrowth behind her. Were they not alone? Had she smelled a loner or a rogue maybe? After a few moments, nothing happened except another rumble of thunder and fork of lightning trying to split the sky. At last his amber eyes fell back on the warrioress.
HER ears were pressed back against her head and her claws were flexing in the soft earth. Waving behind her, her tail looked fluffed up in agitation. Adderstar couldn't figure out what had the she-cat in a twist until another crash of thunder echoed from overhead. Glancing up at the sky and then back down at Inkspot, it clicked. The irritability , the fluffed up tail and twitchy ears.
ROUNDED auds swerved toward the leopardess as Adderstar stood up, balancing easily atop the boulder even though it was wet and slick under his paws. With an easy coil and release of time-tested and trained muscles, Adderstar landed neatly just in front of Inkspot, golden gaze appraising the leopardess. "Are you...afraid of the storm?" The way he said it was clearly incredulous and colored with surprise. If she really was, well, lets just say it would be a shock. Adderstar had never feared storms for all their noise and rain, that's all they were, noise and rain. Thunder couldn't hurt you and ran was just wet. Lightning was a bit worrying but the chances of being struck were slim to none.
THE idea of Inkspot being afraid of the storm brought another question floating to the forefront of Adderstar's mind. Why was she out here? She had been rather icy with him earlier and he hadn't exactly ever been friendly to her, not that he was particularly friendly to anyone, but still. Why would a cat made wary by storms venture out in one for another cat? Adderstar had purposefully left and in the back of his mind, his pride said he should be irritated that she felt the need to come after him at all. He was a leader for StarClan's sake! He didn't need a warrioress to babysit him. The tendril of anger and irritation that was so easily roused in Adderstar began to rear its head but he grudgingly swallowed it down again. He should be glad she cared enough to bother, whether she was wary of storms or not. Even if he was her leader and it was her job to make sure he didn't get himself killed for stupid reasons. At least she bothered to do that job.
A lot of the clan thought Adderstar was mean without necessity. That he was violent and rough and about as friendly as a porcupine. For the most part, the Persian leopard wasn't bothered by such gossip and accusations since he knew he had a horrible temper. His father, Hookedclaw, had passed his temper on to his only son and if anything Adderstar was prone to greater rages than Hookedclaw. In Hookedclaw's time, war had been much more common which meant the older tom had worked out more of his anger on his enemies. Adderstar grew up in a time of relative peace leaving his rages, frustrations and irritation to be taken by the clan or anyone else near him. The thing was though, Adderstar wasn't quite as terrible as everyone thought. Yes, he got angry but so did everyone else. He just chose not to hide it. Adderstar did a lot for his clan, as a warrior and as a deputy. He did his best to pair different warriors together for patrols so they could play off of one another's strengths, a great tracker with a keen observer, that kind of thing. He would do more patrols than any of them and if someone was in trouble, chances were Adderstar would be there long before Wrenstar. Still, the clan never saw it but oh well. If Inkspot was genuinely so wary of storms, Adderstar would give what comfort he could and get her back to camp.
