DRY grass crackled under the weight of Adderstar's steps as he prowled through the heart of LeopardClan's territory not far from camp. It was sunhigh and the territory was oppressively still, as though everything in it was holding its breath. The whole effect was putting Adderstar on edge as the golden tom prowled the undergrowth. Each crackle and rustle of dry leaves made him tense, gold eyes roving endlessly. Days like this for some reason tickled his instincts, telling him something was going to happen, but he'd known that for a while. At least, in the back of his mind he had known it. A week ago, rains had come generously to the territory and Adderstar had been put at ease by the thunderstorm, violent though it had been. This greenleaf had been hard on the territory, the hot sun stealing moisture from anywhere it could be found. Streams shriveled, lakes shrank, ponds turned to slop and then to hard-baked earth. Stones were nearly too hot to tread on when sunhigh came and the winds brought no relief. They blew hot air instead of cool and rattled the dry bones of once green plants all throughout the territory like some sort of warning.
EACH night clouds would roll in with the darkness but since the last thunderstorm no rain had fallen. Lightning would flash and thunder would growl but no relieving rain would come. Each night it put the leader more and more on edge. His dreams became more vivid and violent, full of cloying smoke and suffocating heat. Relief was seldom found in his waking hours as Adderstar was too busy to really find comfort in anyone. Frostfur, his new deputy, was combative and difficult over the littlest of things and arguments with her could easily swallow up hours of the day. They were both strong-willed leopards and it put Adderstar's fur on end that he was finding more and more cats trying to contest his authority. Frostfur, Inkspot, Crescentpaw. They'd drive him to an early grave with the levels of stress they put him under.
CRESCENTPAW of course was a problem all her own. Not only did she more often than not ignore Adderstar but she had taken to brooding. Now, Adderstar was not opposed to brooding. Brooding was quiet and could be done alongside other duties. He would know, he's done it. The problem he had with Crescentpaw was that her brooding was clouding up training whenever Adderstar tried and it was beginning to get on his nerves something terrible. For a cat like him with a short fuse, losing his temper was not a good idea but it seemed the clan was conspiring to make him do just that.
TAIL twitching in irritation at the very thought of his insane apprentice, the young leopard made his way toward the border shared with CheetahClan. The forest around him thinned as he made his way toward the prairie with brisk steps. Overhead thunder growled from the rain-less clouds. As he came within sight of the border, marked by a lone tree with no leaves on its branches, the tom came to a stop to observe the surroundings. All around him tall grasses waved and rattled like old dry bones clanking together sending a shiver down his spine. The oppressive heat pushed down on the dappled tom but he was determined to have a moment alone on the quiet border.
IT was a streak of white light across the sky that made Adderstar jump to his feet again. It struck the ground with a crash and that was all that was needed. The bone-dry grass went up in brilliant flames of orange and red and yellow, leaping high as hot winds washed over the plains. In seconds dark smoke began curling up from the grass and the wind took hold of the flames, sending them sprawling in all directions. Without thinking twice, Adderstar turned tail and ran. With great bounding strides he ran back toward camp as black smoke and hungry flames lapped after him, snapping and popping on the dry foliage as he bounded into the more heavily forested portion of the territory. Trees took the flames with ease, their bark peeling off from the heat and shriveling in minutes. Adderstar's nose stung with the pungent odor of the black smoke but he didn't stop to look back and see if he was ahead of the flames.
"FIRE!" The call rose from the leopard as he ran toward camp. "Fire! Run! To TigerClan! To the river! Run!"
SKIDDING into camp, Adderstar let out a leopard's shrieking snarl and kept up his mantra, ordering the warriors to the river that formed the border with TigerClan. He wriggled into the nursery and ushered out the queens and kits and beckoned to the elders and medicine cat. The thick smoke was coiling toward camp, filling the air, stealing the oxygen they so desperately needed. Standing in the middle of the camp as cats rushed past him, Adderstar kept yelling.
"RUN to the river! To the river!"

Frostfur had been sleeping happily in her nest since all her duties for the day were done. She was dreaming that she chasing a fat water buffalo across the plains. Suddenly, a fire exploded in front of her, cutting her off from the buffalo. Smoke choked her, seeping painfully into her lungs. It was then that a distant voice was yelling 'Fire! Run to the river! To the river!' Frostfur snapped awake and immediately smelled the smoke. She leaped to her feet and exploded out into the clearing. She saw Adderstar burst into camp, telling his clan to go to TigerClan. She bolted toward him, her pale blue eyes narrowed with determination as the smoke burned them. Adderstar! What's going on? She was pushed and shoved as the clan retreated for TigerClan and roared encouragement and orders for them to clear all the dens. She ran to the apprentices den, yanking the young cats from their nests and giving them orders to go to the river.
The apprentices fled the camp and headed to Adderstrike. That should be everyone! She waited for her leader to respond as she saw a wall of angry flames rise against the camp, burning the walls of her home. She hissed at the flames, as if it would scare the fire away and leave her home alone. She watched Adderstar. You go! I'll check the remaining dens and meet you at the river! Before he could object, Frostfur raced across the camp, checking the medicine den. Nothing. The apprentices den, again. Nobody. Warriors den. Not a soul. The nursery. Empty. Then the elders den. Not even a hair. Her lungs were on fire as she finally raced past Adderstar. It's clear! Lets go! She ordered him and raced for the river. She regrouped the clan on the banks and looked for Adderstar. She didn't see him. She snarled with frustration and let out a deep, long howling sound for him. She let out another call before turning her attention back to her clan.

[bg=white][atrb=border,0,table][atrb=width,500,table] He had been dozing softly beside the golden color pelt dappled with large darkened spots. He knew she'd been having a rough time, what with the third mentor. Adderstar was a good mentor, but sometimes he could be too abrasive and Crescentpaw knew it all to well. He sighed, half asleep but still in a waking daze. He rested his chin on her forehead and licked his friend between the ears. Her paw still showed signs of where her own teeth had been forced though her flesh. She could never handle pain or hurt well, but this was the first he'd heard of her inflicting a wound upon herself.
The black leopard tom pushed himself into a sitting position, watching her as the steady rise and fall of her chest signaled she was in a deep sleep. He couldn't help but smile down on his friend. She had been one of the first cats to come and talk to him after he arrived here in such a mangled mess.
His smile faded as he remembered that night. The medicine cat had found him outside the camp, bloodied and nearly dead. He'd been a kind leopard to him and they seemed to share so much in common. The medicine cat was one of the few cats to know his whole story; most the time he just made up something to please others. He hated his father and nearly hissed at the mention of that wretched creature. A small spark of fury flooded through him and a low growl escaped him.
Ravenpaw lied his down next to the clouded leopard's and closed his eyes again. He didn't feel like sleeping, but she needed someone next to her to keep her company. So he assumed that role for her.
As he actually started to fall back asleep, a terrified, yet commanding voice rang out in the camp. He stood straight up, leaving Crescentpaw to fall back against the spot where he was, still sleeping. Sticking his head out of the den, he watched as his clanmates ran past helping others out of den or towards the entrance. He managed to get a word out of one leopard who was pushing a kit towards the entrance; fire. Fear made his muscles go limp and he struggled to stay on his paws.
"Crescentpaw! Wake up! We have to leave, now! There's a fire! Crescentpaw! He ran and pushed his head into her chest, sliding her back a few feet. He let out a frustrated growl and started pacing.
The clouded leopard surfaced back into reality, vision blurry and her mind cloudy. She had been lost in a scary dream world, filled with sharp claws, pain and blood, lots of blood. She looked up at the pacing Ravenpaw and gave a confused look. "What's going on?" The look he gave her terrified her and she forced herself to her paws, the puncture wounds still bothering her. Her eyes widened at the single word her spoke, "Fire." She dashed out of the den, smacking into an older warrior who gave her a look of disdain. She looked away and looked behind her. Ravenpaw was standing right there.
He nudged her forward. "We have to go, now!" As they sped up, the clouded leopardess dodged in between two warriors, the black leopard tom tried to follow, but could not. He looked around him frantically but could not spot her anymore. He found Adderstar standing in the middle of camp, fur standing on end. He stopped beside him and watch the crowd move by, still not picking out her dappled pelt.
He swallowed hard as he heard the sound of flames crackling in the distance. 'Where could she be? Did she make it out already or is she hiding in a den somewhere?' A desperate growl escaped his mouth and he fought to get into some of the dens. Someone's claws caught him in the side and blood instantly welled up underneath his fur. He winced, managing to check all the dens. Still no signs of her. He looked back at the leader, hoping she had found her mentor, but she wasn't there either.
He squeezed out of camp, breath coming in ragged gasps. "CRESCENTPAW!" He screeched, and several leopards looked at him quizzically. He let his tail drag the ground as he followed after his clan, towards the river and towards Tigerclan. Oh how he dreaded those creatures...

It was the sort where you wake up, and have no idea what it was about, but you just know it was lovely, and you want to be back in it so badly. That was how Freekit felt when she was awakened by the call of fire. The small snow leopard at first thought it was a joke. I mean, a fire? Seriously? It had to be a joke, right? Or maybe not...after all, it was Addertsar who did the calling. And Adderstar doesn't play tricks like that on people. Freekit was starting to get really worried when her worst fears were confirmed. She smelled smoke. Freekit tore out of the nursery as fast as her little legs could carry her. Out, out out: she ran as fast as she could, ignoring everything around her. The world, with its fire and smoke and calls of distress, was a blur.

IT was burning. All of it. Hot cloying black smoke curled around the golden tom as soot and ash clung to his pelt. The air was unbearably hot, scalding his lungs as Adderstar stumbled through the gloom. He glimpsed Frostfur, her pelt turned a dirty gray by the black air, as she stumbled out of camp. Bounding toward the nursery to do one last check, Adderstar was nearly there when he spotted Freekit bounding out. He hoped the little one would have enough sense to get to the border and not get herself lost. The fire was surrounding camp, gnawing on the dens and sending brush into explosions of fire. Sparks flew from all directions, one singing Adderstar's muzzle when he wriggled into the apprentice den to make sure they'd all fled. The den was empty but strangely Adderstar couldn't shake the feeling that someone or multiple someones were missing. Troubled by the sensation but forced out by the billowing black smoke and white-hot heat, Adderstar started to run.
EVERYTHING. His home was going up in flames. Adderstar's heart burned with it as he passed the nursery belching black smoke. That was where Spottedpool had given birth to him. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the medicine cat's den explode into flickers of yellow and orange. His heart twisted. He;'d sat beside Mossheart and Shellpaw in that den as greencough had dragged them off to StarClan. Behind him he heard the old tree where the leader's den was exploding from the heat sending shards of burnt wood in all directions. His ears flattened but he didn't look back. That was where Brightstar and Wrenstar and he had slept and addressed the clan. Now it was all gone.
THE territory was no better than camp. If anything, it was worse. Everything was confusing and hot. A smoldering branch lashed out and caught Adderstar's flank making him snarl in pain. It was getting harder and harder to see with each moment that went by but he couldn't stop running. If he did, he'd give in to the smoke and the heat. Leaping over a stream, something in the shallow water made Adderstar pause despite the flames lapping at his heels. A shape was floating in the water. Pulse quickening, the gold tom sprang back into the water, hissing as the water stung his burnt paw pads. Grabbing the cat by its scruff, Adderstar gave a heave. It rolled over revealing Jadeclaw staring sightlessly at the black sky. Adderstar's heart stammered and his jaw clenched but he forced himself to look away. This was no way for a warrior to die but Jadeclaw was gone and Adderstar was losing time.
"SHOULDA run faster," Adderstar growled though there was no bite to his voice, no venom in the growl.
LEAPING out of the stream but backpeddling as a bush in front of him burst into flames, Adderstar snarled as cinders and sparks flew his way. Blinking oily smoke and heat out of his eyes, he leaped over the brush feeling the fur on his belly blacken. As soon as his paws hit the hot ground again, he was running. It wasn't his normal sleek run that swallowed the ground with easy strides. It was short, choppy disjointed steps as every few feet hazy forms and beasts of fire loomed in front of him. Near the border Adderstar tripped on another body but didn't dare look and see who he tripped over, the crisped consistency of their fur enough to tell him they were dead.
AT long last the river appeared and with one last mighty leap, Adderstar flung himself into the water. The sky overhead was black with billowing clouds and the water streaked with soot and ash. Adderstar struggled his way up the opposite bank, pelt heavy with water but didn't bother to shake himself off. Instead he wheeled around. His amber gaze was filled with the sight of flames eating the once beautiful where he'd been taught everything he knew. For the first time in his life, Adderstar felt weak. His legs shook and his breathing was raspy. He felt small, insignificant, beneath the fury of the flames. They were refugees from their own home. His gaze sought out clanmates but his heart squeezed painfully when he saw a pitiful handful around him. His gaze traveled back to the flames. How many clanmates lay dead in that forest? Jadeclaw he knew for sure but how many more were there? Had Ravenpaw and Crescentpaw heard his warning? Had Freekit gotten lost? Had Frostfur foolishly chosen to run somewhere else? For the first time in his life, Adderstar looked desperate and lost as he scrambled to keep himself together when he just wanted to fall over and sleep until this nightmare was over.

[bg=white][atrb=border,0,table][atrb=width,500,table] As the young black leopard ran, his hopes for his clan got slimmer and slimmer. He had already come across one of his former clanmates. H was sure that not many had made it out. His stomach churned and did somersaults as he ran. He hardly had a clan anymore, he was sure of it. As he ran, fatigue started to set in, and he was not even close to the river that marked the border between Leopardclan and TigerClan.
The flames were upon him in an instant, glowing crimson and orange tongues licked at his heels and sides, making him screech in pain. He tried to move faster, but the exhaustion that cramped up his muscles would not allow it. Ravenpaw's paw steps faltered so often that even time he tripped, it took a huge effort to get himself back up. He coughed violently with each breath he tried to take.
His thoughts traveled to Crescentpaw and Freekit. They were too young to die, but since he and the female apprentice were separated, he was starting to wonder if she had passed like that others. Pain gripped his heart and made it hard for him to swallow. And Freekit, she hadn't even become an apprentice. He prayed to Starclan that they were still alive and had made it to the other side, unlike him.
The black leopard tripped while jumping over a fallen log and landed face first into the ground. He fought to get up but couldn't, his tired muscles scream at him to stop and lie down. He looked around him, the flames curling around towards him, destroying any means of escape.
As his vision started to blur, a blurry leopard came running towards him. She grabbed his scruff in her jaws and began to awkwardly dragging him to the river, which was surprisingly closer than he thought. "Are you trying to die?! What's wrong with you, making a lady carry you. You selfish leopard." The voice made him laugh. She was starting to sound more like her mentor, Adderstar.
"Thanks for dragging me, but I think I can walk now." Was his hoarse reply. She didn't let go till they came to the edge of the river and she dumped him in. He sputtered and flailing about, while Crescentpaw swam gracefully to the other side, laughing hysterically at the apprentice tom. "You're doing it wrong!" He came closer, but ducked under the surface and her heart stopped. He was too tired to stay above the water and definitely didn't know how to swim. She dove back into the water, looking for him underneath the waves.
She saw his head come up again, but this time, he wasn't moving about. She grabbed him by the scruff, but he was like dead weight, dragging her under as she fought to get back on shore.
Finally, beginning to feel as fatigued as the black leopard, the muddy bottom of the other side oozed between her paws. As she dragged him up the side of the bank, he sputtered and coughed, chest heaving with the effort. She need the medicine cat, but she wasn't sure there was one left. So many of her clanmates were killed in the fire. She lied down beside him, waiting for the others. "Adderstar! Frostfur! Freekit!" She narrowed down this list in her mind. Five. That was all that was left of them. Silent tears rolled down her cheeks as she send prayers to Starclan to receive each of them.

Frostfur ran as soon as she saw Adderstar leave the camp, her lungs burning as if the fire were in them and not the territory. The smoke clouded her vision, making her eyes water, as she ran. He was just ahead of her and she was falling behind. Her energy was running out and her head was foggy. Her legs were like rubber and a few times she collapsed. She struggled to her feet as the river came into sight. She ran as fast as her weak legs would carry her. But as soon as her paws touched the water, she crumpled to the ground, unable to go another step. She wouldn't make it across the river, she would drown. She could feel the heat of the fire growing stronger, it burned. She struggled to her paws, her legs trembling uncontrollably. Half way up with her rear still on the ground, her legs buckled and she fell back into the dust. She let out a loud, mournful howling sound, saying her last goodbyes to her clan, alive and deceased. Her sides heaved and her silver eyes, once holding all her life force, her strength, her determination, her light... It was all fading away with each and every heartbeat. Her eyes started to close when a sound like thunder sounded. She moved her near-lifeless eyes and saw a tree coming down on top of her. Adrenaline shot through her, lending energy to her legs. She slowly got to her feet and leaped away just as the tree crashed down where she was a heartbeat ago. She landed awkwardly, thumping onto her side. Her sides heaved as she struggled for air. She had to get out! She wasn't going to die a slow painful death! She looked at the river with determination and stepped into the water. She took another step, and another.
Soon, she was belly deep when her legs turned to rubber again. Frostfur locked up her mind. Letting her body turn into a silver and black stone figure. She stiffened her legs, refusing to let them crumple. As soon as she was sure she was going to be alright, she loosened her body. But one step landed her at the bottom of the shore of the river. Her paws pushed her back up and she leaped onto the bank again, sinking into the dirt. She knew she was going to die. She knew it. But death by water seemed worse than death by fire. As she lay there, hearing and feeling the flames getting closer to her, she closed her eyes and waited for death. She wondered if her ex-mate, Sootfur, would receive her to take her to StarClan. She could almost see him now. His midnight black fur with less dark spots on it. His blazing green eyes and his large, powerful paws shaking the ground with every step. She could feel the warmth of his fur next to her, lending her strength. She scented the air. She could only smell smoke and the faintest trace of Sootfur. A strained purr rumbled weakly in her throat. "Sootfur... have you come for me?"

Freekit, somehow, had made it across the river. The small snow leopard cub lay panting on the banks. Great, now her fur was sopping wet. It took forever for snow leopard fur to dry. Then shy shook herself. "I can't believe it!" she muttered. Your home just burned down, and all you can worry about is your fur? Good grief! What would Mother think? Then Freekit realized what a strange thought that was. Before, home had always meant Oliver and Mother. The three of them, together, that was home. But now when she thought of home she didn't think of the days when she had been Freedom. No, Freekit thought of LeopardClan. LeopardClan was home. And now...her home was gone. Again! The cub felt tears sting her eyes. |

FIRE danced in Adderstar's eyes as he hauled himself up the muddy bank and turned to look at his former home. Pain shot through him, but not a physical pain. It felt physical but none of his wounds could ever hurt this badly. It twisted his heart, holding it fast so that it could hardly pump. There was a strange ringing in Adderstar's ears as he watched smoke spiral up into the once-blue sky and darken it to black. Like ink. His heart jerked in his chest as he watched Freekit struggle out of the waters. He should go help her but his feet were stuck to the ground, paws sunk into the mud as if the earth would never let him go. As if it would hold him prisoner and force him to watch his home burn. There was nothing he could do. No amount of anger or denial or sadness would ever fix this, ever make it better. His home, his beautiful home...Everything was on fire, nothing was saved. It had been so dry, the pines took the fire like a long lost lover. Even from across the river, with TigerClan's jungle at his back, Adderstar could hear pines exploding in the heat and crashing to the ground as flames gnawed away at the trunks and branches. The mountains where the leopards made their home were blacked out by the hazy, oily smoke.
HIS eyes were dragged to the blacked out sky. "I hope you can see this Wrenfeather!" Adderstar rasped. "We're paying for your crime! Our blood is on your paws!"
SHE couldn't hear him and he doubted StarClan could either. Adderstar for the first time ever wanted to crumble, wanted to fall to pieces in the mud and never get up to put himself back together again. The dreams, the vision, they made sense now. The unbearably hot, still air pressing down on the clan. The shriveling rivers. It all made sense. StarClan had been preparing LeopardClan to burn. Adderstar watched a cedar across the river as it pitched over on its side, trailing flames and belching smoke. He wanted to fall with it and nearly did until he glimpsed silver in the river.
FROSTFUR, that annoying pain in the neck deputy he'd chosen as a spur of the moment appointment. Drowning.
BEFORE he even realized it, the soot-smeared tom was moving. He bounded on burned paws past Crescentpaw and Ravenpaw, leaped over Freekit and splashed into the river. Soft mud sucked at his paws as he waded deeper and finally lost contact with the bottom. Frostfur had vanished under the water and Adderstar didn't hesitate to follow. A leader, deputy, two apprentices and a kit. That was all that was left of LeopardClan. He'd tripped over one of his own warriors burned to a husk fleeing the fire. He would not let the river take another one when fire had already robbed Adderstar of so much. Fire had taken Inkspot and Blackstep and Mistpaw. All those cats with so much promise. Striking downward through the murky river water, Adderstar was not about to loose another one. Frostfur was annoying, there was no doubt about it, but he wanted her there to babble in his ear and defy him at every turn just because he knew that if she was then she was alive. She was one more leopard left to rise from the ashes of their despair.
THROUGH the muck and mud at the river bottom, the golden tom could barely see the dirtied silver pelt of his deputy. Lunging forward, Adderstar sank his fangs into Frostfur's scruff, out of the corner of his eye, Adderstar thought he saw Frostfur's lips move but didn't pay that much attention. Instead, his paws hit the river bottom and calling on the last reserves of energy in his body, Adderstar kicked upward. It was hard, probably the hardest thing he'd ever done, hauling a fellow warrior through the murky water. His body, oxygen-starved from the fire's smoke was now screaming for the life-giving air as water pushed itself through his nose and down his throat and into his lungs. Each muscle in his limbs shrieked in pain from burns and sheer exhaustion but Adderstar focused singularly on the flicker of light overhead that meant oxygen. Blackness ringed his eyes, a fog creeping closer and closer. He felt himself slipping, sliding on a steep slope with no claw-holds. He'd been given a life of tireless energy to save his clanmates, to deliver them to safety. By StarClan he would do just that.
CLOSING his vivid amber eyes, Adderstar's head broke the surface. Jerking his head back so far his neck muscles screamed in protest, he hauled Frostfur up too, forcing her head above the surface. His paws paddled furiously to keep them afloat. Everything burned and he couldn't even tell if it was from the fire or the lack of oxygen underwater. Struggling toward the shore, Adderstar staggered through the shallows. With each step Frostfur got heavier and by the time they hit true land, Adderstar couldn't lift another paw. He released the silver-pelted deputy and tipped sideways, flopping on the bank, landing with a wheeze. His golden eyes were only half open, flames dancing off the bright irises. The ash and oily soot had been washed from him by the river but his pelt was now pressed against his sides making the muscular tom look small. Overall it was a sad sight, the mighty Adderstar laid low with only a handful of the clan still alive.
"FREEKIT..." the rough rasp of his voice sounded painful and felt even more so. "Freekit come here." So different from the normal demanding sharpness of Adderstar.

The cub realized something then. Inkspot and Mistpaw. Where were they? Freekit hadn't seen them cross the river, get to safety. She scanned the little group for the apprentice and warrior. They weren't there. Because they were dead. Freekit blinked back the tears in her eyes. I will not cry, she resolved. I will be brave. That was what Mama had always told them: be brave. Freekit wouldn't cry and moan like a worthless lump. LeopardClan was home! And these leopards were her family now. Not in the same way as Mother and Oliver, but in just as important one. They weren't any kin of hers, but Adderstar and Frostfur and Crescentpaw and all the rest were family. And she was going to take care of them. Freekit heard Adderstar's voice, and ran over to where he and Frostfur lay. He sounded so tired. Did he lose a life? That would be horrible, in a time like this. "Yes, Adderstar?" she mewed a bit anxiously, dipping her head.
